Only eleven days after the divorce he married Poppea, whom he loves passionately. Monteverdi's ambivalent, abysmal opera centers on Poppea's coronation as empress, and concludes with one of the most beautiful and touching duets in opera history. In the 35 years between his first opera, L'Orfeo, and his last, L'incoronazione di Poppea, he often commented, also in writing, on this fundamental problem of opera composition. His comments on opera designs were always aimed at the truthfulness of the characters and at the meaningful use of music as a credible expression of emotions. It seems that the first important opera composer in the history of music found the desired conditions for the creation of truthful opera characters late in his life. In his last opera, Monteverdi came up with a drastic innovation. The plot is based on a historical subject, i.e. dramatic characters could not be more truthful and closer to reality than those figures around the Roman emperor Nero, who had actually existed in history. The opera L'incoronazione di Poppea therefore has the distinction of being the first opera with a realistic plot. Dates & Cast Performance dates 27. Salzburg becomes the first international meeting place for numerous contemporary composers - Rudolf Réti and Egon Wellesz organize "International Chamber Music Performances" at the Mozarteum. Béla Bartók, Paul Hindemith, Arthur Honegger, Darius Milhauds, Ethel Smyth, Anton von Webern and many more meet at Café Bazar to establish the first international peace project in music after the First World War: On August 11, 1922, the International Society for New Music is founded - as an interest group for composers* and interpreters of contemporary music. "At the time of its founding, the society had a diplomatic purpose: to bring people together to experience music that had been banned four or five years earlier. The IGNM was a project of (new) listening. After the Second World War, the society then showed another facet: to actively promote high-modern music by young composers*, to break up old patterns and to work out something new," says musicologist and project manager of an IGNM exhibition on the occasion of the anniversary Matthew Werley.   2022: ARCO - Art, Research and Creation Opus Exactly 100 years later, the Mozarteum University, in cooperation with Gmem Marseille, is launching a new project dedicated to the intensive promotion of contemporary music: for the first time, the International Summer Academy 2022 will host ARCO - Art, Research and Creation Opus, a French-Austrian academy for contemporary composition. "ARCO is the further development from an academy for contemporary music founded by the French composer Yann Robin and the former German-French Summer Academy OPUS XXI, both of which followed the idea of placing highly renowned French ensembles alongside international young composers, towards a joint and professional finalization of their works up to the public performance. The state funding that ensembles in France receive for outreach work, the awarding of composition commissions and for concerts makes it possible to finance an extraordinarily high level of professionalism that would not be affordable in other contexts," explains Rector Elisabeth Gutjahr. The presidents of France and Austria have assumed patronage of the project. since 2019, selected participants in ARCO have been receiving intensive coaching and immediate feedback on their works in direct work with renowned coaches such as Henry Fourès, Eva Reiter, Yann Robin and Johannes Maria Staud, as well as the ensembles Les Métaboles, Ensemble Multilatérale and the Tana Quartet. ARCO has so far taken place twice in Marseille in a former tobacco factory - due to the pandemic - and in the future will alternate annually at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg. The core team of ARCO focuses primarily on composition; this year, for the first time, vocalists from the Mozarteum University as well as a conducting student will also participate. "It really is a festival, very international and with top-class commissioned compositions. In this respect, it creates a very unique format that you won't find a second time," Elisabeth Gutjahr is pleased to say. the two academies not only offer a unique atmosphere for the participating musicians, but also hold an exciting summer in store for the audience. The two opening concerts will kick things off: ARCO on July 9 in the Max Schlereth Hall and the Summer Academy on July 11 in the Solitär. The ARCO program then leads to, among other things, a production at the Marionette Theater and a special concert experience at the Museum der Moderne. At Mirabellplatz 1, there will be small lunchtime concerts, and two large final concerts. For the first time, all master classes and additional courses as well as concerts will be concentrated at Mirabellplatz 1, and the spatial separation of vocal and instrumental classes of past years will be eliminated; an exciting opportunity for new things and for even more intensive, interdisciplinary exchange between students and teachers. baroque Summer Academy in Siena For those who would like to experience the entire program of the International Summer Academy this summer, there is a special highlight coming up in September - SOAK goes Siena! Together with the Italian Accademia Musicale Chigiana, the Mozarteum University established the Baroque Summer Academy in 2021: Master Classes to deepen the study of Baroque music in Siena. Eight teachers from the Department of Early Music will travel to the musically glorious Italian city for concerts, master classes and an opera performed in concert, and together with the participants will create a program worth seeing as the "final festival" of the Summer Academy in Tuscany.

Every year, the Ruhr Piano Festival honours artists whose life's work is closely connected to the festival with its prize. The duo Yaara Tal & Andreas Groethuysen played their 17th concert at the Ruhr Piano Festival on 8 July 2023. The "desire for shared sound" characterises each of their performances, for which they often put together special programmes for the Piano Festival.

In addition to renowned speakers such as Robert Hatten (Austin/Texas), Otfried Büsing (Freiburg), Cosima Linke (Saarbrücken), Ulrich Kaiser (Munich), Christian Utz (Graz), and Martin Rohrmeier (Lausanne), who will present their latest work, students will also have the chance to present their projects.  GMTH Congress 2022: MODELS September 30 - October 2 Mozarteum University Music theory as a lively and inspiring subject Music is an artistic question or message, a mystery to be deciphered. Craftsmanship: How do you compose a sonata in the style of Viennese Classicism? Analytically: How can the mystery be traced? Historically: How did Mozart learn to compose and what can we learn from him? Scientific: Music is always a testimony of its time, and a variety of approaches and methods are needed to gain insight into it - what can these look like? These are the questions that the discipline of music theory addresses both within and outside its pedagogical sphere at a music university. The subject, which one might still know as a series of dry compulsory subjects, has properly moulted in the last two decades. It is open to artistic questions of all kinds and offers an extremely versatile approach to music with "diverse" answers, but also new questions. Music theory as a discipline thus builds bridges between musicology, research and musical practice, between pedagogy, historical as well as contemporary composition and improvisation.  It encompasses an enormously multifaceted and widespread canon of subjects that is needed at every music education institution. Not only do more than 200 participants from German-speaking and international countries prove that music theory is a lively, inspiring subject that is colorful and anything but dusty. The GMTH congress also shows that music theory is constantly reinventing itself artistically, scientifically, pedagogically and institutionally, questioning its methods and striving to integrate new media and modern technical developments such as Artificial (Artistic) Intelligence. Under the somewhat abstract theme of "Models" and self-deprecating subtitles, the event will feature lectures, workshops, panel discussions ("Battaglia"), presentations of new computer-based approaches ("Lab"), and even a master class. Leading international researchers will present their latest work and students will also have the opportunity to present their projects. The special feature of GMTH's topic selection is that everyone can apply anonymously with a presentation, whether students or international greats: The only thing that counts in the selection is the quality, not the name.   Public events presenting the impressive artistic results of music-theoretical work - the dates: The supporting program of this year's annual congress of the Gesellschaft für Musiktheorie (GMTH) is intended to explore, in view of the congress theme "Models", the field of tension between composition as "historical syntax" and "real" composition. A program highlight was dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the IGNM, which was celebrated in 2022. The final took place on February 16, 2023 in the Solitär.

After A Midsummer Night's Dream and Owen Wingrave, the Department of Opera & Music Theater at the Mozarteum University will once again devote itself to Benjamin Britten's abysmal music-theatrical oeuvre. This winter semester, two of his masterpieces will be performed: Albert Herring in December 2022 will be followed by The Turn of the Screw in January 2023.
