Understanding of quality
in (art) university teaching

The Mozarteum University Salzburg is committed to a vibrant teaching and learning culture. This preserves academic freedom, offers students and teachers a wide range of creative freedom and sets high standards in terms of professional quality, commitment and personal responsibility. The university promotes a qualification profile for students that is developed in the best possible way through research- and EEK-oriented teaching, among other things.
Teaching and learning oriented towards the development and exploration of the arts is based on artistic practices, the reflection and integration of current artistic insights, and the direct promotion of independent, innovative artistic creation. This goes hand in hand with research-oriented teaching, which integrates research-based learning, the incorporation of the latest scientific findings and the early promotion of independent, innovative scientific work.

Teaching at the Mozarteum University Salzburg is based on the following principles:

  1. Integrity and responsibility: honesty, fairness, commitment, trust and goodwill (see also the Code of Conduct as the applicable ethical and academic guidelines of the university)
  2. Academic freedom: promotion of critical thinking, open discussion and diversity of opinion
  3. Reciprocity of teaching and learning – both processes are dynamic and influence each other
  4. Continuous negotiation and further development of innovative teaching, learning and examination formats
  5. Versatility and virtuosity in media, techniques, technologies and formats
  6. The university and teaching as a safe space in a community that embraces diversity, variety and inclusion. It creates safe conditions for responsible, anti-discriminatory interaction and for experimental, creative work.
  7. Innovative, transparent and fair feedback and examination culture.
  8. Participation and a planetary understanding of broadening perspectives, which thrive on an international student body, taking into account the sustainability strategy.

In addition, other aspects contribute significantly to the understanding of quality in art university teaching, such as

  • Mediation between students,
  • Intersubjectivity,
  • Gaining knowledge,
  • Performance and competition in the sense of strengthening resilience.

The Mozarteum University Salzburg recognises students not only as learners, researchers or artists, it also strives to provide the best possible conditions and support for the personal development and maturation of its students into independent, socially engaged, creative and competent individuals who are able and willing to contribute ‘responsibly to the solution of human problems and to the prosperous development of society and the natural environment’ (§1 UG).

Understanding of quality
Development and exploration of the arts (EEK)

The development and exploration of the arts involves gaining knowledge and developing methods using aesthetic and artistic rather than scientific processes of knowledge acquisition, with artistic activity representing the essential means for this and being understood as an intrinsic part of the research process. This involves combining information and reflection with one's own artistic experience and intuition.

‘Information’ refers to a culturally and historically grounded spectrum of experience related to the respective artistic practice, combined with an understanding of aesthetic positioning and contextualisation. This also includes engagement with relevant scientific sources and discourses.
‘Reflection’ refers to the critical questioning and reconsideration of both one's own artistic practice and the practice of others.

The Mozarteum University promotes the visibility and critical reflection of EEK within the institution and in dialogue with external institutions. The following perspectives serve to support profiling and further development and to improve understanding of the institution's intentions and orientation:

  • Discursive: intensive examination of essential current issues
  • Cooperative: with outstanding and challenging partners, in projects, in encounters
  • exploratory: opening up new, including interdisciplinary, areas
  • integrative: together with people from society who are not at home in the professional field of art and culture
  • competitive: in the sense of a motivating and inspiring comparison of ideas, concepts, productions, performances (especially competition: internal, international, locally and worldwide)

Artistic practice can also include or merge with mediation, documentation, critical discourse and other processes. In this sense, the development and exploration of the arts can be understood synergistically.
The Mozarteum University Salzburg understands artistic research as part of EEK – similar to how scientific research can be described as an intrinsic component of science. EEK requires a suitable environment in which it can be discussed academically, profiled and developed further on an interdisciplinary basis.
The Mozarteum University Salzburg provides the framework for EEK to be analysed, documented and its processes published; it promotes an intersubjective context and critical discourse.

Understanding of quality
Research

The Mozarteum University is committed to an honest and fair research culture and to the fundamental principles of good scientific practice.
Freedom of research and the associated plurality of methods are the indispensable foundations of good scientific and artistic practice. In particular, the synergies between scientific and artistic research approaches that are particularly evident at an art university offer the potential to adapt and transform methods in different research settings in a reflective manner.

In addition, the following applies:

  1. Process orientation and results orientation are the poles around which research revolves. Research management and quality assurance enable their review and integration into overall university practices within the structure of the art university. Research is understood as an organic part of successful cooperation at the art university.
  2. Transversality and forms of co-creation offer formal guidelines that have a de-hierarchising effect and can activate strengths cooperatively. They intertwine established areas, enable the overcoming of disciplinary boundaries and challenge visible and invisible models of power and hierarchy.
  3. Fundamental relevance, intersubjectivity and comprehensibility of research in terms of process, method and dissemination.
  4. Inclusivity, diversity and sustainability as essential principles in the design and implementation of research.
  5. Prudent, forward-looking handling of research data of all kinds and a constructive-critical reference to social and technological developments.
  6. Reflexive handling of the methods, technologies and questions of positioning used both within the university and in relation to international research communities.
  7. Digitality is taken into account across the entire spectrum of topics and critically constructive reflection – also in the sense of support in all phases of the respective res

The concept of active criticism is a central element of the researcher's self-image. A constructive-critical perspective on deep historical and traditional developments forms the basis for future-oriented research activities.
The interaction of the elements described above guarantees an open, agile and cooperative research culture, which is both a prerequisite and a condition for the participation of society as a whole and the strengthening of democracy.
