On 2nd June 2025, the University Council of the Mozarteum University voted on the shortlist presented by the Senate and elected Univ.-Prof. Dr. Constanze Wimmer as the new Rector of the Mozarteum University Salzburg for the term 1st April 2026 – 31st March 2030.

Anna Hechenblaickner (flute graduate of Bernhard Krabatsch) was awarded the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research's award of appreciation on November 21 in Vienna.

When Salzburg resounds with the spirit of genius loci in February, the Mozarteum University once again invites you to the International Mozart Competition. Now in its 70th year, this renowned competition brings together outstanding young musicians from all over the world and this year, 24 violinists from 17 countries and 25 pianists from 15 countries will compete at the highest international level.

The Ö1 Talentebörse Composition Prize in the amount of 10,000 euros is awarded by Ö1 and the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB) and will be announced for the eleventh time in 2026. The composition prize is a composition commission for a chamber music work, which may also include electronics.

With the overture from Axur, re d'Ormus by Antonio Salieri, followed by Joseph Haydn's Sinfonia concertante in B flat major Hob I: 105 and the Prague Symphony in D major K. 504 by Wolfgang A. Mozart, Maestro Ion Marin and the Academy Orchestra of the Mozarteum University will also perform at the Mozart Week in 2024. The orchestra made its debut during Mozart Week 2023.

2020 marked the 125th anniversary of the birth of Carl Orff (10.7.1895-29.3.1982). His stage work "Carmina Burana" is internationally known as well as his approach to music education and the percussion instruments named after him. His concept of elementary music is about initiating creative music making from the beginning and thinking musical learning from improvisation.

The four-year term of office for the new Rectorate of the Mozarteum University Salzburg begins on 1 April 2026. Music educator Constanze Wimmer will lead the institution. Together with her team – Hannfried Lucke, Karin Skarek, Helmut Schaumberger and Eugen Banauch – she aims to provide key impetus for the further development of the arts, teaching and research. In autumn 2024, bass-baritone Lisandro Abadie, actress Hanna Binder, conductor Christiane Büttig, visual artist Annette Fauvel, guitarists Giuseppe Feola and Bozhana Pavlova, cultural and media scientist Paul Feigelfeld, composer Laure M. Hiendl, pianist Lei Meng, soprano Allison Oakes and violist German Tcakulov will take up their positions as university professors at the Mozarteum University. The Platform on Politics of the Past at the Mozarteum University Salzburg deals with cultures of remembrance from the 1920s to the 1990s. The critical reflection on the university's political past, especially during the periods of Austrofascism, National Socialism and the post-war era, plays just as important a role as art projects against forgetting and for greater awareness. Researchers are currently conducing a citizen research project that invites the local community to share relevant documents and contemporary accounts.

The question of how the new comes into the world is a fascinating and equally complex one. The second panel discussion of the Salzburg University Development Impulses in cooperation with the Knowledge Transfer Centre West attempted to shed light on the creative processes that precede the emergence of the new with experts from various disciplines and fields.

Twenty violinists from 17 countries gathered at the International Mozart Competition in the violin category from February 6 to 12 at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg. First prize went to Xunyue Zhang, second prize to Yuki Serino, and third prize to Maxim Tzekov.
