Under the artistic direction of Vice-Rector Hannfried Lucke, the Mozarteum University will once again become a meeting place for the crème de la crème of young musicians from all over the world. Audiences and experts alike can look forward to intense days of competition and public rounds, culminating in two festive final concerts.

The very first International Mozart Competition took place in August 1956, marking the 200th anniversary of the birth of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and was a cooperation between the great music universities of Salzburg and Vienna, known at the time as the Akademie für Musik und darstellende Kunst Mozarteum and the Akademie für Musik Wien. Sixty-one artists from 21 countries took part. Since 1975, the competition has been held at regular intervals at the Mozarteum and is among the most prestigious competitions for classical music.

For many musicians, participation is a significant step on their path to an international career. The competition is proud of its association with renowned artists such as Diana Damrau, Renée Fleming, Magdalena Kožená, Genia Kühmeier, Esther Hoppe, Thomas Zehetmair, Sergey Malov and the Novus String Quartet, all of whom enjoyed success at the competition.
