General Information Austria The democratic republic of Austria is a federal state with 9 provinces: Burgenland, Carinthia, Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Styria, Tyrol, Vorarlberg and Vienna. The overall area of Austria amounts to 83,858 km2 and the population numbers about 9 million inhabitants. Austria is a member state of the European Union and of the United Nations. The City of Salzburg The city of Salzburg, capital of the federal province with the same name, is situated in a basin surrounded by limestone mountains to the south and to the west, and by hilly country with many lakes to the north and east. The city was the centre of an ecclesiastical principality for almost a thousand years. The architecture of the city is largely characterized by magnificent buildings and large squares in the old town centre created during the Baroque period. During the 20th century Salzburg became renowned as a festival, art and congress city and also an important centre of business, transport and administration. The city has about 150,000 inhabitants. The favourable geographical situation of the city of Salzburg as an axis linking north and south can be traced back historically to the 8th century. It goes without saying that contacts with the European area are fostered; the idea of bringing the nations of Europe together has a centuries’ old tradition in Salzburg. Wolfgang Amadé Mozart, the genius composer who was born here, travelled from his home town to cities such as London, Paris, Milan, Naples, Prague and Mannheim and introduced a European dimension into musical life in Salzburg. In the following century music festivals were organized at irregular intervals which culminated in the founding of the Salzburg Festival in 1920. Salzburg thus opened itself not only to the whole of Europe but also on an international scale. Fostering and promoting encounters, and cooperationin the fine arts were thereby further intensified and became more international. The History The history of the Mozarteum University Salzburg begins in 1841: On the fiftieth anniversary of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's death, the music-loving citizens of Salzburg, with the support of the Prince-Archbishop, founded the "Dommusikverein und Mozarteum" as a conservatory for the cultivation of sophisticated church music. At that time there was a shortage of young instrumentalists, which was reflected in the state of the musical landscape: "The choir (...) was drowned out by the orchestra, which really played too loudly (...) the best players were the three trombonists - the next best was the double bass player (...). In the birthplace of the most wonderful composer who ever lived, music is indeed in a state of sad decay " (Vincent and Mary Novello on the occasion of their visit to Salzburg in 1826, from the notes in their travel diary "A Mozart Pilgrimage"). The Mozarteum was primarily intended as a conservatory for the training of young musicians for the ecclesiastical service of the Salzburg Cathedral and was to initiate a revival for Salzburg. The goals of the founders also included organising concerts, engaging musicians and, above all, paying them. In addition, gifted students of the conservatory were supported financially through the awarding of scholarships. In the first decades of its existence, the Mozarteum was not only an educational institution, but also an important focal point around which culturally-minded citizens could unite. Moreover, it was strongly anchored in the political consciousness, through the development of the city into a music and tourist centre based around Mozart''s heritage. In 1870, the International Mozart Foundation was established to promote talented musicians, and a decade later the Mozarteum Public Music School was founded, which in 1881 was taken over by the International Mozart Foundation. In addition to running the music school, the foundation administered an orchestra (later the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg) as well as a fund for the support of talented musicians. In 1914, the Mozarteum Public Music School became an independent educational institution and was recognised as a public conservatory. Due to the difficult financial situation after the First World War, the music school was nationalised in 1922, becoming the Mozarteum State University in 1939 and the Mozarteum Reich University in 1941. After the end of the Second World War, teaching, which had largely come to a standstill, was gradually resumed and the Mozarteum continued under the title of Musikhochschule. The beginning of the 1950s saw the founding of numerous new departments, academic institutes and special courses, and in 1953 the Academy of Music was elevated to the status of the "Mozarteum" Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Salzburg. A change in the law governing higher education in 1970 resulted in the Academy, together with the three other Austrian arts academies, became a so-called "Hochschule", marking a democratisation in the development and promotion of the arts (read more: On the way to becoming an arts university). in 1998, the former music school received university status and was given the name by which it is known today: Mozarteum University Salzburg. In addition to the Mozarteum University, two other independent Salzburg institutions bear the name "Mozarteum": the International Mozarteum Foundation and the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg. Registration/Enrolment Exchange students have to complete the online pre-registration and upload the completed Antrag auf Einschreibung, a scan of their passport and, if they are a master student, a scan of their bachelor certificate to Mobility Online. After they have completed the online pre-registration and uploaded the required documents the the students will receive the payment information for the ÖH-fee of € 24,70 and the access to MOZonline student account. Together with the payment information the students will receive as well the Pin Code to register in the MozOnline System Student card:Exchange students can pick up their student card upon their arrival in Salzburg Servicepoint, Mirabellplatz 1, Mo-Friday 10-12 o’clock. For registration in the office the students need the original of their passport. If you change your address or give up the apartment because you are leaving Austria you have to notify the Registration Office. For registration you need a Meldezettel (registration form). The valid passport or personal identity card has to be presented when registering. In general the Student Halls of Residence send the completed Meldezettel to the Residents’ Registration Office. Registration Certificate Citizens of the EEA who stay longer than three months in Austria have to apply for a certificate of registration from the Magistrat Salzburg, Office of Public Order. Citizens from third countries (non-EEA citizens) need a visa before entering Austria. There are various kinds of accounts, for instance a student account or a current account for which different conditions apply. Medical Care Please check whether your health insurance in your home country is also valid in Austria. If not, you must take out health insurance in Austria. We recommend taking out insurance in Austria even if your health insurance is valid in Austria because it makes the bureaucracy much easier. For foreign students from countries which are members of the European Union it is sufficient to bring a European Health Insurance Card. In case of need this has to be submitted to the relevant doctor. Guests from other countries with which there is a social insurance agreement with Austria can have a care certificate issued from their health insurance in their home country. With this care certificate you can collect an Austrian certificate of illness from the Salzburg Gebietskrankenkasse which can then be submitted to the relevant doctor. In the case of private insurance it is important to check whether it also covers health services in Austria. The Österreichische Gesundsheitskasse offers the possibility of taking out health insurance (individual student insurance and voluntary individual insurance).
