Dojin Jang, „Inscape“

In The Use of Bodies, Giorgio Agamben refers to Spinoza’s concept of acquiescentia in se ipso, which means satisfaction within oneself. I found a conceptual connection between this idea and the title Inscape. The word Inscape, coined by Gerard Manley Hopkins, refers to the unique inner essence of a being or thing – not its external form, but the internal structure, time, identity, and movement that constitute its inner vitality. It is not a state of emptiness, but rather a meditative state of listening inward, a quiet concentration unique to each individual. Through this state of „focused becoming-event“, I attempted to capture the silent inner movements of being that resonate within oneself.
This was not about turning to the outside, but rather about realizing how the sounds resonate within the music itself – how they form auditory shapes from within. Of course, these auditory forms are not always born out of stillness or silence. On the contrary, they often emerge from the tension between internal elements, and through this, form an „event“. The music begins with a single resonance – a gesture that opens the horizon of the event. It sinks into quasi niente – a state of almost nothing – and, through the cognitive act of recollection, linked to memory and time, expands the horizon of event-possibility. Still, by reflecting on Erwartung, I scattered fragmented gestures across the musical space, and within the longer temporal flow, sought to create a dialectical process of thesis–antithesis leading toward a synthesis – toward the formation of an event.
I hope that my thoughts on auditory perception may invite listeners to step into this horizon of events.
