News … Home News 1.5 million euros for Spot On MozART - Innovative Musicfilms 1.5 million euros for Spot On MozART - Innovative Musicfilms 23.01.2020 Spot On MozART Sandra Steindl For selected projects on digital and social transformation in the period 2020 to 2024, the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research has distributed 50 million euros to public universities. Of the 71 applications submitted, 35 were approved for funding - 1.5 million euros will go to the SPOT ON MOZ ART - innovative musicfilms® project at the University Mozarteum Salzburg (UMS), which was the only art university with a musical focus to receive a grant. A total of eight small initial projects are already on the home stretch for realization as part of the transdisciplinary project - including works directed by violinist Benjamin Schmid and film producer Hannes Schalle, film artist Claudia Lehmann and media artist Conny Zenk. Together with students from the University Mozarteum Salzburg (UMS), they are facing the exciting attempt to develop media-artistic works in various formats of modern DigiTech, based on Mozart's works and historical sources. They range from films and games to augmented reality and human interactive technology, thus opening up numerous fields that offer artistic-social research levels with a very high potential for innovation. In addition to the Angewandte University and the Vienna University of Technology, universities in Salzburg have expressed interest in participating in the project, which offers cross-institutional perspectives for new formats of collaboration. At the beginning of June, the kick-off projects will be presented to a broad public for the first time at a kick-off event - "it will be a multifaceted evening full of surprises, a colorful zebra in the black and white digitization landscape," says Rector Elisabeth Gutjahr. An interdisciplinary project with many dimensions The combination of historical music and new media with the communicative moment of the "spot on," the moment of encounter, naturally raises a number of questions that will be examined as part of SPOT ON MOZ ART innovative musicfilms®. "How can we succeed in making the supra-temporal, magical moments of our historical cultural and artistic treasures comprehensible and tangible in a world of hypermobile, short-lived digital communication? To what extent can an expansion of the understanding of the work be generated in the 21st century, and what does a new, innovation-driven engagement with Mozart's work mean for Salzburg as a location?" says Rector Elisabeth Gutjahr. Building on research results from the at least 50 individual projects to be implemented within the next few years, SPOT ON MOZ ART - innovative musicfilms® aims to artistically exploit the creative potential of digital and social transformation and further develop it together with its cooperation partners. Art and technology, tradition and innovation combine here quite naturally. Salzburg offers a great stage for this. Digital skills in all university areas To enable creative, artistic and scientific production and innovation, the interdisciplinary project integrates digital skills in all university areas. It thus combines forward-looking digital technology with tradition in the curricula. The focus is on the development of artistic digital formats that also respond to the expectations of the art market, the media landscape and culture. "SPOT ON MOZ ART - innovative musicfilms® also has the potential to bring together students from very different fields of study to work constructively and, above all, together on something. This can result in a kind of interface competence that makes it possible to look far beyond the traditional stage situation," says Eugen Banauch, head of research management at the University Mozarteum Salzburg. In order to spin ideas for initial projects, two student camps have already taken place at the Blaa-Alm in Altaussee - with students from the University Mozarteum Salzburg, but also from other Salzburg universities. News … Home News "Ian Stoutzker Prize in Memory Of Yehudi Menuhin" to Thomas Reif & David Eggert "Ian Stoutzker Prize in Memory Of Yehudi Menuhin" to Thomas Reif & David Eggert 27.01.2020 Press release Sandra Steindl In memory of violin virtuoso Yehudi Menuhin, the University Mozarteum Salzburg invites you to a special event on January 27, 2012 - the awarding of the "Ian Stoutzker Prize in Memory of Yehudi Menuhin" to violinist Thomas Reif (class Harald Herzl) and cellist David Eggert (class Clemens Hagen). The two "String Players of the Year" from the Mozarteum University will be honored at the event and will perform works from their repertoire (see above). The sponsor of the highly endowed award is the successful British businessman and philanthropist Ian Stoutzker, who was a friend of Yehudi Menuhin and founded the organization LIVE MUSIC NOW together with him in 1977. David Eggert is a Canadian cellist who combines an innovative approach to traditional repertoire with a determined commitment to contemporary musical creations. Solo performances in Europe and North America identify the Salzburg native as an emerging talent. David Eggert won among others the 1st prize and five special prizes at the International Cello Competition "Antonio Janigro" in Zagreb. At the  Naumburg Cello Competition in New York he was awarded an honorary prize. Thomas Reif, violinist from Rosenheim, has been a regular participant in master classes and a young student at the Mozarteum University since 2004, initially with Bruno Steinschaden and from 2005 with Harald Herzl. In 2006 he was accepted by the Leopold Mozart Institute for the Promotion of High Talent. Thomas Reif has already received several prizes at music competitions, including 1st prize at the International Johannes Brahms Competition in Pörtschach, 1st prize at the Mozarteum's Ruggiero Ricci Competition and 2nd prize at the European Competition for Young Violin Students in Gorizia.

The 1st prize in the piano division (Bösendorfer Prize), the "Audiodata Audience Award" and the special prize for the best interpretation of a work by Wolfgang A. Mozart went to the Austrian Elisabeth Waglechner, who studies with Stefan Vladar at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, where she was accepted into the highly gifted course with Alma Sauer at the age of 12 and studied with Christopher Hinterhuber.

After the successful first edition of "With Dylan on the Road", a competitive travel scholarship program of the Mozarteum University, the project inspired by the polyartist Bob Dylan is entering the next round.

Applications for ARCO - Art, Research and Creation Opus 2024 are now open! The French-Austrian Academy for Contemporary Composition, a cooperation between the Mozarteum University and the GMEM - Centre national de création musicale Marseille, will take place in Salzburg from 3 to 13 July 2024.

Every year, the Mozarteum University honours students majoring in violin who have shown particular talent and achievement with the Paul Roczek Award, which is endowed with 10,000 euros. The winner of the Paul Roczek Award 2023 is Andreas Siles-Mellinger.

The inter-university institution Science and Art of the Paris-Lodron University and the Mozarteum University Salzburg, which has existed since 2002, is dedicated to the multifaceted relationship between science and the arts of all disciplines in research, teaching and communication. From the winter semester 2024/25, a four-year doctoral programme will be established on the topic of "Cultures in Transition".

The guitar department of the Mozarteum University is starting spring 2024 with an extensive programme: students in the classes of Andrea De Vitis and Laura Young have the unique opportunity to showcase their talent at concerts in Italy, which are made possible as part of an Erasmus collaboration with the renowned Boccherini Conservatory in Lucca (Tuscany).

Berlin composer Frank Schwemmer was "very satisfied" after the world premiere of his new piece "mein Wort mein Glück mein Weinen" on 9 March 2024 in the Great Hall of the Mozarteum Foundation.

Elisabeth de Roo studied song and oratorio at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg and property and facility management at the University of Applied Sciences in Kufstein. With her play "Kein leichtes Mädchen. Käuflicher Liederabend", she addresses a sensitive topic and tries to encourage people to discuss it. 

Sarah Nemtsov, renowned composer and university professor of composition at the Mozarteum University, will receive the Heidelberger Künstlerinnenpreis 2025 for her outstanding contributions to contemporary music. The prize, which has been endowed with 10,000 euros since 2025, is one of the most important cultural prizes in Germany and is the only prize in the world to be awarded exclusively to female composers.

With the approval of research funding totalling 2.5 million euros from the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG), the foundation has been laid for the development of a state-of-the-art X-Reality Lab - the digital centrepiece of the new Mozarteum University site at Kurgarten.
