The Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, Public Service and Sport (BMKÖS) recently announced the winners of the Austrian Art Award 2022, each endowed with 15,000 euros - Johannes Maria Staud receives the Art Award in the category of music.
In 1997 Staud co-founded the composers' group Gegenklang in Vienna, of which he is still a member; since 2018 he has taught composition as a university professor at the Mozarteum University. His works have been premiered by Ensemble Modern and the Berlin Philharmonic, among others, and he has received commissions from the Vienna Philharmonic, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Cleveland Orchestra.
His important works include "On the Voice of the White Chalk" (Specter I-III) and the diptych "Par ici - Par là". His opera "The Willows," to a libretto by Durs Grünbein based on Algernon Blackwood's story "The Willows," addresses the issues of the refugee crisis and right-wing populism and premiered at the Vienna State Opera in 2018. in 2021, ensemble xx. jahrhundert premiered his work "Listen, Revolution (we're buddies, see -)" at the Wien Modern Festival.
The Ö1 Talentebörse Composition Prize in the amount of 10,000 euros is awarded by Ö1 and the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB) and will be announced for the eleventh time in 2026. The composition prize is a composition commission for a chamber music work, which may also include electronics.
From October 2026, students at Mozarteum University Salzburg will have the opportunity to gain in-depth insight into orchestral conducting. Christian Thielemann, together with his assistants Martin Fuchsberger and Jobst Schneiderat, will assume responsibility for the artistic training of a select group of aspiring orchestral conductors. Registration for the audition is open until 28 February 2026.
Prizes for an outstanding Master's thesis 2023/24 have been awarded to Tim Anselm Gebel, Carlos Goikoetxea Cancho and Andreas Johannes Neubacher - congratulations!
Establishing and developing the profile of an ensemble is one of the most demanding and, at the same time, most appealing challenges in artistic development. Many globally successful ensembles were formed during their studies, laying the foundation for an international chamber music career. However, existing study programmes alone can only provide limited incentives and framework conditions for this. The ensemble scholarship is the answer to this: convincing project proposals receive financial support for a period of one year to realise specific artistic projects.
