    A Farewell After Eight Remarkable Years 
    A defining eight-year period at the Mozarteum University Salzburg comes to an end on 31 March 2026 with the conclusion of the current rectorate’s term of office, under the leadership of Rector Elisabeth Gutjahr. In recognition of her service, she has been awarded the Grand Decoration of Honour in Gold for Services to the Republic of Austria. Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Mario Kostal is to retire, while Vice Rector for Resources Anastasia Weinberger will continue to contribute to the Austrian higher education sector as Technical Committee Chair for Sailing at the International University Sports Federation. Hannfried Lucke has been re-appointed as Vice Rector for Art.

    Grand Art Prize of the State of Salzburg to Alexandra Karastoyanova-Hermentin 
    The Mozarteum University congratulates its alumna Alexandra Karastoyanova-Hermentin on receiving the Grand Art Prize of the State of Salzburg 2024! With this award, which is being presented to a female composer for the first time this year, the State of Salzburg is sending a strong signal in favour of the importance and creativity of women in music. The Grand Art Prize is endowed with 20,000 euros and is awarded annually alternately in the fields of visual arts, literature, music and performing arts.

    Salzburg Cultural Fund Prize awarded to Yvonne Wasserloos 
    Yvonne Wasserloos, university professor of musicology, has been awarded the International Grand Prize for Science & Research (worth €12,000) by the Cultural Fund of the City of Salzburg for her outstanding achievements as a researcher, including her work on ‘Music and Power – Dimension and Context’ and her research on the social, political and cultural significance of music – especially in connection with democracy and the culture of remembrance. From May, he will take up his teaching position at the Department of Keyboard Instruments. We are very much looking forward to it!

    Oscar Jockel - conductor and composer 
    Oscar Jockel is currently Kirill Petrenko's conducting assistant with the Berlin Philharmonic and a conducting fellow of the Karajan Academy for two years. He has been appointed the first Composer in Residence of the Brucknerhaus Linz for the 2020/21 season. Previous commissions range from works for solo instruments to sound installations and orchestral works, the latter for the Bruckner Orchestra Linz or the Camerata Salzburg, for example.

    Universities on the move 
    Higher education in Salzburg takes steps toward a sustainable future: On Thursday, 13 November 2025, members of five Salzburg universities and colleges set off on foot from their respective institutions and made their way to the Frohnburg, symbolically taking steps toward sustainable development. Once assembled at their destination, the five delegations formed a heterogeneous group united in a common cause: rectorate members, students, teaching staff, researchers, administrative staff and sustainability officers—around 50 people in all. Members of the Mozarteum University’s sustainability task force walked side by side with lecturers and students from the Institute for Open Arts.
