At the 17th International Beethoven Piano Competition, organised by the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (mdw), pianist Martin Nöbauer won the 2nd prize worth a total of 12,000 euros (ex aequo with Jonas Stark) as well as the Klemens Kramert special prize worth 2,000 euros. This year's Opus Klassik in the category "Instrumentalist of the Year" goes to Mozarteum professor Dorothee Oberlinger - for her recording "Night Music" with the Sonatori de la Gioiosa Marca (dhm/Sony Music). The OPUS KLASSIK is the successor prize to the ECHO, which the recorder virtuoso has already won three times since 2008.

The project sets out to accomplish a data-driven study in musical interpretation, connecting information from human analyses of a number of performances by Karajan, with algorithmically derived data spanning several decades of recordings. Although the project is conceived as a case study on Karajan, we wish to demonstrate the promise of data-intensive, interdisciplinary approaches to musicological studies of expressive performance, and help in establishing this as a new open standard approach in empirical musicology.
