Andreas Macco
Bass-baritone Andreas Macco has appeared on leading opera and concert stages throughout Europe and internationally, performing a wide repertoire ranging from Monteverdi to Berg. After engagements with major German opera houses, he has worked internationally as a freelance artist since 2004. Since 2010 he has been Professor of Voice at the Mozarteum University Salzburg.
After studying teaching and voice at the music academies in Stuttgart, Frankfurt and Vienna, Andreas Macco became an ensemble member at the opera houses of Hanover (following a prize at the local opera’s singing competition), Frankfurt and Bonn. From 1994 he began appearing internationally as a guest artist, performing frequently in Italy in Bologna, Rovigo, Pisa, Brescia, at La Scala in Milan, the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, Rome, the Arena di Verona and the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Florence. Other engagements have taken him to Tokyo, Zurich, Lyon, Rouen, Moscow, Riga, Donetsk and Athens, as well as to festivals including Bregenz, Salzburg, Bayreuth and the Ruhrtriennale. The bass-baritone has worked as a freelance singer since 2004.
His repertoire includes more than 60 roles ranging from Monteverdi to Berg. Among them are the Mozart roles Sarastro, Leporello, Don Giovanni, the Commendatore and Don Alfonso; Crespel and the villains in Les Contes d’Hoffmann; Gounod’s Méphistophélès; Golaud in Pelléas et Mélisande; Wagner’s Dutchman, Wotan, Gurnemanz and Pogner; Verdi’s Filippo II and Conte di Walter; Vodník in Rusalka; and the Animal Trainer/Athlete in Alban Berg’s Lulu.
He has appeared in major concert venues including the Vienna Konzerthaus and Musikverein, the Great Hall of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, the Kreuzkirche in Dresden, the Berlin Philharmonie, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Sala Santa Cecilia in Rome, the Großes Festspielhaus in Salzburg, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus in Athens, the Alte Oper Frankfurt, the Festival de Lanaudière in Montreal and in Taipei. His concert repertoire ranges from Bach and Handel to Mozart, Rossini, Verdi, Dvořák, Mendelssohn and Bernd Alois Zimmermann. In recital he performs Lieder by Schubert, Schumann, Wolf, Ibert and others.
He has worked with conductors including Claudio Abbado, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Zubin Mehta, Andris Nelsons, Plácido Domingo, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Gianluigi Gelmetti, Marco Armiliato, Michael Gielen, Sylvain Cambreling, Franz Welser-Möst, Christoph von Dohnányi, Gary Bertini and Eliahu Inbal, and with stage directors such as Peter Stein, Robert Wilson, William Friedkin, Peter Mussbach, Katharina Wagner, Stéphane Braunschweig, La Fura dels Baus and Achim Freyer.
Since 2010 Andreas Macco has been Professor of Voice at the Mozarteum University Salzburg. He has given masterclasses in Kaunas (Lithuania) and at the International Summer Academy Mozarteum.
