Marcello Gatti is one of the leading specialists in historical flutes, internationally acclaimed for his refined virtuosity, expressive cantabile and stylistic depth. Performing on original instruments from the Renaissance to the Romantic period, he collaborates with many of the foremost ensembles in the field and combines an active concert career with an enduring commitment to teaching.
Italian flautist Marcello Gatti completed his musical studies in his hometown of Perugia, developing an interest in early music and original instruments at a very young age, and subsequently continuing his studies in Rome and Verona. Under the guidance of Barthold Kuijken at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague (Netherlands), he obtained his soloist diploma with honours in 1997.
A sought-after soloist, widely acclaimed by critics for his sensitive virtuosity, lyrical cantabile and stylistic authority, he has performed in concerts all over the world. His repertoire spans the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods, which he performs on historical transverse flutes (traversi), collaborating with leading specialised ensembles such as Accademia Bizantina, Europa Galante, Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, L’Orfeo Barockorchester, Cantus Cölln, Il Pomo d’Oro, the Gaechinger Cantorey and the Boston Early Music Festival Orchestra, among many others.
He has participated in over 90 audio and video recordings with historical and period instruments.
Since 1995, he has been actively engaged in teaching, giving courses and masterclasses at numerous institutions. After teaching in Milan, Verona and Vicenza, and at the Leipzig University of Music and Theatre, he was appointed Professor of Historical Flute at the Mozarteum University Salzburg, where he has taught since 2014. He also teaches summer courses at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana and at the Fondazione Italiana per la Musica Antica in Urbino (since 1998).
