New Supplementary Certificate: Art & Sustainability

The start of academic year 2025/2026 brings with it the start of a new elective studies block in Art & Sustainability, for which students can obtain a supplementary certificate. It offers the chance to explore the complex relationship between sustainable developments in our university and society at large, and artistic and scholarly practice. The core module represents a jumping off point for the range of interdisciplinary courses which are offered through the Institute for Coaching and Career.
Competence in sustainability is competence for the future. Artists and educators carry a great responsibility but also have great potential for not only reflecting on social change but also contributing to it. This interdisciplinary issue is already rooted in may areas of life at he Mozarteum University, with initiatives ranging from Green Events, to new narratives on how to solve the climate crisis, to activism for equality and acts of visible solidarity.
The following courses, which are compulsory elements in the elective studies block “Art & Sustainability”, will be offered this year:
- VO Kunst & Nachhaltigkeit (2 SWS/2 ECTS-AP), WS25/26 (Lecture: Art & Sustainability)
- PT Praxis Kunst & Nachhaltigkeit (2 SWS/2 ECTS-AP), SS26 (Project: Art & Sustainability in Practice)
The lecture series “Kunst & Nachhaltigkeit” (which will be held in a block rather than weekly) will include contributions from Mozarteum faculty members as well as guest speakers, each of whom conducts artistic research into social, ecological, economical or cultural dimensions of sustainability. Students can also complete the elective course “ability to act – activist artistic forums on sustainability” in the winter semester 2025/26, which can be counted towards their supplementary certificate in Art & Sustainability. (PT, 1 SWS/1 ECTS-AP).
“Art & Sustainability in Practice”, a project-based course that can be taken in summer semester 2026, handles concrete approaches specific to various artistic disciplines that arts educators can use in their work and sphere or activity. This can be complemented by other courses offered as free electives by various departments or as interdisciplinary options.
