Since March 2019, the Mozarteum University has been offering the part-time university course in wind orchestra conducting as a continuing education program. The focus is on imparting specialized knowledge as well as practical practice and instruction with regard to the required knowledge of wind orchestra conducting.

Due to the excellent teaching of musical and instrument-specific fundamentals at the musical educational institutions in the state of Salzburg and the constantly increasing level in the approximately 150 brass bands in Salzburg, the demands on the bandmasters of the Salzburg Brass Band Association are also increasing.
Therefore, the focus of the course is on conducting lessons (individual and group lessons) including artistic work development as well as conducting practice (correpetition and orchestral exercises), whereby the repertoire to be worked on is broadly diversified from traditional to symphonic and is oriented by the degree of difficulty to the practice to be expected of the participants later.
Teaching content related to the leadership role as a bandleader is woven into the course. Another focus is on the topics of arrangement and transcription, repertoire and analysis, as well as methodology/didactics of wind band conducting, combined with exercises in harmony, composition and ear training.
The university course is rounded off with the offer of observation of instrumental lessons of all instruments of the wind orchestra instrumentation at the Mozarteum University, teaching contents from the jazz/pop and percussion area as well as rhythm training and solfeggio. In addition to the lessons at the University Mozarteum Salzburg, the teaching program also takes the form of teaching rehearsals at brass bands as well as practice conducting at the Military Music Salzburg. This practical area involves close cooperation with the Salzburg Wind Band Association.

The university course is open to all who are already a Kapellmeister*in or can prove comparable previous knowledge. It is not bound to any other (pre-)studies at the Mozarteum University.
A prerequisite for admission is the successful completion of the entrance examination. An online application is required for this, during which the necessary documents are checked. Only after the examination of the completely submitted documents and a positive assessment of one's own works will an invitation to the admission examination be issued.
The university course starts every two years in March (summer semester) and is held on Saturdays all day during the academic year.

The entrance examination
If an invitation to the entrance examination is issued, an oral examination must be taken to determine artistic aptitude. This consists of three parts:
A - Interview
Interview with the examination committee on motivation, background, expectations (= personal presentation including artistic/musical career and previous conducting duties as well as submission of a written CV as part of the application for the entrance examination)
B - Presentation & discussion of a wind orchestra work of free choice.
The score must be submitted in duplicate or as a copy for the entrance examination.
C - Conducting & Work Analysis
Conducting and work analysis of one of the following three works:
D -German language skills

The admission examination takes place only every two years; the course starts in the following summer semester.
