Residence regulations for international students

Detailed information for all countries of origin and degree programmes can be found on the OeAD homepage or at the Austrian Federal Ministry of the Interior. Students from EU/EEA countries or from Switzerland who stay in Austria for more than three months will need to obtain a registration certificate (Anmeldebescheinigung) in addition to their registration of address (Meldezettel). To obtain an Ameldebescheinigung, students will need to prove the following:

  • admission to a recognised educational institution (confirmation of studies)
  • comprehensive health insurance cover (e.g. European Health Insurance Card, insurance policy)
  • sufficient financial means (declaration of financial means such as Erasmus scholarship, financing by parents, etc.).

This certificate costs a one-time fee of €15.00 and is permanently valid. If you cannot show your certificate (Anmeldebescheinigung) in the event of a police check, you will be liable for a fine or €250.00. The Salzburg Office for Public Order is responsible for this registration. The following documents are necessary in order to obtain the "Anmeldebescheinigung": A completed application form, a valid passport or identity card, proof of address (Meldezettel).

Various bank accounts are available, e.g. student accounts and current accounts. Different conditions apply to these accounts.
Opening an account in Austria will require you to show an identity card or a passport, proof of address, and for student accounts also your student ID.

You must ensure that the health insurance provision you hold in your home country is also valid in Austria. If not, you will definitely have to take out health insurance in Austria. Even if your foreign health insurance is valid in Austria, we recommend taking out Austrian health insurance, since the bureaucracy in the event that you need medical assistance will be greatly simplified.

For foreign students from countries of the European Union it is sufficient to bring a European Health Insurance Card. If you require medical attention, you must present this card to the attending physician.
Guests from other countries with which a social security agreement exists can have their health insurance company in their home country issue a care certificate. With this care certificate, you can pick up an Austrian health insurance certificate from the Salzburg Regional Health Insurance fund (Salzburger Gebietskrankenkasse), which you then hand over to the attending physician.
In the case of private insurance, it is important to check carefully whether it also covers services in Austria. The Austrian Health Insurance Fund (ÖGKK) offers the possibility of health insurance ("Student Self-Insurance" and "Voluntary Self-Insurance"). If you are interested, please contact the health insurance company directly:
