The teacher training programme in Design: Technology.Textiles (GTT), offered at the Salzburg campus, allows students to explore independent creativity in the areas of design, body, space, fashion and technology and prepares them for a teaching career. Taking a conception and its implementation as their starting point, students will acquire new knowledge through experimenting with materials and their analysis. The teacher training programme for secondary education consists of a Bachelor's and a Master's programme and trains students to become teachers in their chosen subjects.
The Bachelor's degree programme in Secondary Education is designed to be completed within 8 semesters. Two teaching subjects must be chosen, in addition to which students are required to complete free elective subjects, a general grounding in educational science, and integrated teaching placements. The subject Design: Technology.Textiles can be combined with any other teaching subject.
The bachelor's degree program in Design: Technology.Textiles provides basic training in both the subject itself and its didactics, as well as educational sciences and teaching practice. It provides the preliminary professional training for a teaching career at middle and high schools.
In addition, this course of study enables students to work in non-school occupational fields such as design, art and cultural education, youth work, adult education or media work.
The teacher training programme at secondary level is carried out in cooperation with the following partner institutions (Central Region Partnership):
Study in Salzburg
Study in Linz
The aim of the Bachelor's degree programme is to prepare students for a career in secondary school teaching. A full teaching qualification can be obtained by consecutive enrolment in the corresponding Master's programme.
Graduates are able to deal critically with the issue of humans and materials, to work with children and adolescents, but also to recognise the talents and needs of individuals in their subject and guide them in a constructive direction.
From an artistic and creative perspective, the course pursues the question of material culture and how we perceive different lifeworlds. There is a focus is on creative and manufacturing processes as well as objects or artifacts that influence and contribute to society and lifeworlds as well as the people who inhabit them. In this context, one's own creative, informed activity and active participation in shaping the environment become central. This focus provides an emphasis for the creative-practical and scientific examination of materials, techniques and products, as well as for the development of artistic/creative methods and the reflection of (material) phenomena in culture and society.
The study programme offers students the opportunity to explore independent creativity in the areas of design, body, space, fashion and technology. Taking a conception and its implementation as their starting point, students will acquire new knowledge through experimenting with materials and their analysis. Students will also reflect on their own or socially prevailing consumer behaviour, taking into account sustainable production and the use of recyclable materials.
Innovative strategies for technically implementing artistic ideas are explored and put into practice, functionality and technology are integrated as decisive components, and the interlocking of crafts, science and technological innovations with regard to the digitalisation or economisation of work processes is addressed. The resulting synergies between production techniques, practices and subject-specific reflection form the basis for the pedagogical and didactic part of the study programme.
The first four semesters of the bachelor's programme teach basics in the context of design, craft and material culture. Basic courses are offered in the various workshops and studios as well as methods of visualisation and artistic-design practice. First, products are realised, documented and put into a didactic and theoretical context. In addition, this fundamental study programme opens up subject-specific and didactic theories and enables students to gain their first experience of teaching in secondary schools. Building on the competencies acquired in the first four semesters, the focus from the 5th semester onwards is on the ability to implement artistic projects and drafts in the subject areas of design, body, space and technology, from the initial idea right through planning to production, documentation and presentation.
Students focus on the conception and realisation of individual artistic and creative ideas with the goal of developing their own creative style and strengthening it through reflection; thorough critical reflection will take place on many levels, covering sociocultural, economic and ecological aspects of the body, space and the environment as well as technical developments. Perspectives from current research in inclusive education, diversity, interculturality, and interdisciplinarity are embedded in the projects and provide a basis for developing and planning lessons.
For admission to the Bachelor's programme, various certificates and examinations are required:
The teaching subject Design: Technology.Textiles must be combined with a second subject. The combination with the teaching subject Art Education at the Mozarteum University is possible; for admission to the Art Education programme, a separate entrance examination in artistic competences must also be passed.
The General Admissions Procedure for all teaching degress (regardless of subject) consists of several steps:
Please check the Central Region Partnership website for exact dates and procedures.
