Recorder player Max Volbers and baroque violinist Mayumi Hirasaki were recently awarded an OPUS KLASSIK 2023. A conversation about the lively character of early music, the search for the new and the intensive research into the repertoire at the Department of Early Music at the Mozarteum University.

What a beautiful story: In 1869, the Austrian Emperor Franz Josef travelled to Japan. On board was a Bösendorfer grand piano as a gift for the Japanese Emperor Meiji. Legend has it that a naval officer was allowed to play the instrument for the tenno - a first musical experience that cemented the friendship between the two countries.

Making music together remotely—in real time, across an entire continent: this exciting EU-funded initiative to create a “European Symphony” aims to bring digital technology and classical music together in new ways. Musicians in 12 different locations will use innovative technology to overcome physical distances and perform a joint concert for symphony orchestra and large chorus. Compositions can be submitted until 31 July 2026. The Mozarteum University is also taking part.
