Opera & Music Theatre … Home Study Departments Opera & Music Theatre Archive Archive Production Archive Department of Opera Medusa Giuditta 23.6.2025 Medusa Giuditta  Caught between Baroque and contemporary music, Kai Röhrig and Florentine Klepper's opera class set out in search of clues with ‘Medusa / Giuditta’, following on from the successful double bill ‘Elissa / Dido & Aeneas’ in 2023. Opera production Christian Jost: Poet's love 31.1.2025 Christian Jost: Poet's love  Opera production Vincenzo Bellini: I Capuleti e i Montecchi 15.12.2024 Vincenzo Bellini: I Capuleti e i Montecchi  The performance of Vincenzo Bellini's opera I Capuleti e i Montecchi delivered a powerful reinterpretation of the masterpiece. Directed by Alexander von Pfeil, the production centred on the relentless feud between two rival clans and the profound despair of its victims. This staging transcended specific eras, placing the story in a universal, timeless setting that brought Bellini's dark vision of love and war to the stage with harrowing clarity. Opera production Wolfgang Amadé Mozart: Le nozze di Figaro 26.6.2024 Wolfgang Amadé Mozart: Le nozze di Figaro  As a play, La Folle journée by the scandalous author Pierre Auguste Caron de Beaumarchais was banned in Vienna. However, Mozart and Da Ponte were able to suggest to Emperor Joseph II that the genre of opera would defuse the revolutionarily objectionable text and were thus commissioned to compose and write the libretto. The question of whether they did not in fact intensify the play in other ways is one that is posed anew in every production. With Le nozze di Figaro, Gernot Sahler and Alexander von Pfeil's opera class continued their Da Ponte cycle, which began with Così fan tutte in May 2023. Opera production Giuseppe Verdi: Falstaff 20.5.2024 Giuseppe Verdi: Falstaff  Sir John Falstaff is a natural phenomenon: his appearance is imposing, his demeanour commanding, his manner possessive. And most fascinating of all: the event does not care about rules, conventions or decorum, it simply exists for its own sake, in a sense for nothing but its belly. Opera production Elegy for young lovers 31.1.2024 Elegy for young lovers  "What qualities must a person possess in order to dominate both dramaturgically and vocally in an opera?" and "What must a man of mature age look like who is in close relationships with a crazy old lady, a young girl and a doctor at the same time?" Opera production Hansel and Gretel 15.12.2023 Hansel and Gretel  With her production, Rosamund Gilmore embarked on a journey into the subconscious and combined the deep psychological layers of the fairy tale with the film-visualized works of Claudia Lehmann's students. Opera production Elissa / Dido & Aeneas 30.6.2023 Elissa / Dido & Aeneas  More than 330 years after the premiere of the only complete opera by Henry Purcell, the French composer Henry Fourès composes a setting for Dido and Aeneas and calls it "Elissa". A second name for the queen that allows the character to exist on its own, without direct ties to Aeneas. Opera production Wolfgang Amadé Mozart: Così fan tutte 21.5.2023 Wolfgang Amadé Mozart: Così fan tutte  The young officers Ferrando and Guilelmo* do not want to let their fatherly friend Don Alfonso get away with it - after all, he doubts the fidelity of their fiancée! But instead of the demanded duel, they accept his proposal of a wager and thus become handmaidens in the work of destroying their love relationships. Opera production Benjamin Britten: The Turn of the Screw 27.1.2023 Benjamin Britten: The Turn of the Screw  Opera production Benjamin Britten: Albert Herring 7.12.2022 Benjamin Britten: Albert Herring  After A Midsummer Night's Dream and Owen Wingrave, the Department of Opera & Music Theater at the Mozarteum University will once again devote itself to Benjamin Britten's abysmal music-theatrical oeuvre. This winter semester, two of his masterpieces will be performed: Albert Herring in December 2022 will be followed by The Turn of the Screw in January 2023. Opera production Claudio Monteverdi: L'incoronazione di Poppea 2.7.2022 Claudio Monteverdi: L'incoronazione di Poppea  Opera production Ermanno Wolf-Ferarri: Il campiello 15.5.2022 Ermanno Wolf-Ferarri: Il campiello  Opera production Charles Gounod: Faust 28.1.2022 Charles Gounod: Faust  Opera production Wolfgang Amadé Mozart: The Magic Flute 23.6.2021 Wolfgang Amadé Mozart: The Magic Flute  Opera production Wolfgang Amadé Mozart: La clemenza di Tito 29.1.2021 Wolfgang Amadé Mozart: La clemenza di Tito  Opera production Franz Schubert: Winter Journey 28.1.2021 Franz Schubert: Winter Journey  Opera production Tan Dun: Tea - A Mirror of Soul 19.12.2020 Tan Dun: Tea - A Mirror of Soul  Opera production Benjamin Britten: Owen Wingrave 20.1.2020 Benjamin Britten: Owen Wingrave  Opera production Joseph Haydn: Il mondo della luna 21.6.2019 Joseph Haydn: Il mondo della luna  Opera production Jacques Offenbach: Les contes d'Hoffmann 10.5.2019 Jacques Offenbach: Les contes d'Hoffmann  Opera production Georg Philipp Telemann: Don Quixote at the wedding of Comacho 19.1.2019 Georg Philipp Telemann: Don Quixote at the wedding of Comacho  Opera production Philippe Boesmans: Round dance 5.12.2018 Philippe Boesmans: Round dance  Opera production Benjamin Britten: A Midsummer Night's Dream 21.6.2018 Benjamin Britten: A Midsummer Night's Dream  Opera production Wolfgang Amadé Mozart: La finta semplice 2.5.2018 Wolfgang Amadé Mozart: La finta semplice  Opera production George Frideric Handel: Alcina 5.12.2017 George Frideric Handel: Alcina  Opera production

This year's lecturers included: Christian Altenburger, Pierre Amoyal, Zakhar Bron, Ya-Fei Chuang, Mario Diaz, Barbara Doll, Andreas Frölich, Alexander Gilman, Michaela Girardi, Wally Hase, Christopher Hinterhuber, Latica Honda-Rosenberg, Robert Levin, Barbara Lübke, Hannfried Lucke, Leonel Morales, Valentin Radutiu, Thomas Riebl, Paul Roczek, Andreas Schablas, Markus Schirmer, Andreas Schmidt, Herbert Schuch, Sergiu Schwartz, Christoph Strehl, Wilfried Strehle, Claudius Tanski, John Thomasson, Kirill Troussov, Pauliina Tukiainen, Philipp Tutzer, Michael Vaiman, Arie Vardi, Andreas Weber and Dina Yoffe. Top-class academy summer
News … Home News Top-class academy summer Top-class academy summer 08.07.2022 Press release © Universität Mozarteum 1922: Foundation of the IGNM August 1922. Salzburg becomes the first international meeting place for numerous contemporary composers - Rudolf Réti and Egon Wellesz organize "International Chamber Music Performances" at the Mozarteum. Béla Bartók, Paul Hindemith, Arthur Honegger, Darius Milhauds, Ethel Smyth, Anton von Webern and many more meet at Café Bazar to establish the first international peace project in music after the First World War: On August 11, 1922, the International Society for New Music is founded - as an interest group for composers* and interpreters of contemporary music. "At the time of its founding, the society had a diplomatic purpose: to bring people together to experience music that had been banned four or five years earlier. The IGNM was a project of (new) listening. After the Second World War, the society then showed another facet: to actively promote high-modern music by young composers*, to break up old patterns and to work out something new," says musicologist and project manager of an IGNM exhibition on the occasion of the anniversary Matthew Werley.   2022: ARCO - Art, Research and Creation Opus Exactly 100 years later, the Mozarteum University, in cooperation with Gmem Marseille, is launching a new project dedicated to the intensive promotion of contemporary music: for the first time, the International Summer Academy 2022 will host ARCO - Art, Research and Creation Opus, a French-Austrian academy for contemporary composition. "ARCO is the further development from an academy for contemporary music founded by the French composer Yann Robin and the former German-French Summer Academy OPUS XXI, both of which followed the idea of placing highly renowned French ensembles alongside international young composers, towards a joint and professional finalization of their works up to the public performance. The state funding that ensembles in France receive for outreach work, the awarding of composition commissions and for concerts makes it possible to finance an extraordinarily high level of professionalism that would not be affordable in other contexts," explains Rector Elisabeth Gutjahr. The presidents of France and Austria have assumed patronage of the project. since 2019, selected participants in ARCO have been receiving intensive coaching and immediate feedback on their works in direct work with renowned coaches such as Henry Fourès, Eva Reiter, Yann Robin and Johannes Maria Staud, as well as the ensembles Les Métaboles, Ensemble Multilatérale and the Tana Quartet. ARCO has so far taken place twice in Marseille in a former tobacco factory - due to the pandemic - and in the future will alternate annually at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg. The core team of ARCO focuses primarily on composition; this year, for the first time, vocalists from the Mozarteum University as well as a conducting student will also participate. "It really is a festival, very international and with top-class commissioned compositions. In this respect, it creates a very unique format that you won't find a second time," Elisabeth Gutjahr is pleased to say. the two academies not only offer a unique atmosphere for the participating musicians, but also hold an exciting summer in store for the audience. The two opening concerts will kick things off: ARCO on July 9 in the Max Schlereth Hall and the Summer Academy on July 11 in the Solitär. The ARCO program then leads to, among other things, a production at the Marionette Theater and a special concert experience at the Museum der Moderne. At Mirabellplatz 1, there will be small lunchtime concerts, and two large final concerts. "Visitors will experience an arc this summer over a program that begins very contemporary with ARCO, leads into the classical and romantic periods at the Summer Academy, and concludes with the competitions and events at the Festival - including a concert celebrating the 100th anniversary of the International Society for New Music and a special performance to mark its founding day at Café Bazar. In addition to the Festival, during the summer you can see young talent 'in real time' and be there live when something new is being created," says Elisabeth Gutjahr, describing the special features of this year's "Academy Summer" at the Mozarteum University. the details of the Summer Academy program have also already been determined: Alexander Gilman will perform a brilliant opening concert with his LGT Young Soloists, selected students will show their skills in the concert hall of Schloss Höch as part of the cooperation with the Flachau Municipality and the Cultural Association, and the intensive courses 'Young Excellence' guarantee a great program for the final concert on August 5," says Hannfried Lucke, Vice Rector of the Mozarteum University and artistic director of the Summer Academy. In addition to already familiar names, this year's program will also welcome new guests, including former Summer Academy laureate and concert pianist Herbert Schuch, violinist Latica Honda-Rosenberg, Graz pianist Markus Schirmer, Alexander Gilman, violin professor at the renowned Royal College of Music in London, cellist Valentin Radutiu, internationally acclaimed bass-baritone and KS Andreas Schmidt, and Munich violinist Barbara Doll. For the first time, all master classes and additional courses as well as concerts will be concentrated at Mirabellplatz 1, and the spatial separation of vocal and instrumental classes of past years will be eliminated; an exciting opportunity for new things and for even more intensive, interdisciplinary exchange between students and teachers. baroque Summer Academy in Siena For those who would like to experience the entire program of the International Summer Academy this summer, there is a special highlight coming up in September - SOAK goes Siena! Together with the Italian Accademia Musicale Chigiana, the Mozarteum University established the Baroque Summer Academy in 2021: Master Classes to deepen the study of Baroque music in Siena. Eight teachers from the Department of Early Music will travel to the musically glorious Italian city for concerts, master classes and an opera performed in concert, and together with the participants will create a program worth seeing as the "final festival" of the Summer Academy in Tuscany.
