The Department of Opera and Musical Theatre is a beacon with special charisma and appeal. Every year, two opera classes consisting of up to 15 highly talented students are prepared by renowned theatre makers for the high demands of an international opera career.

The commissioning of a "European Symphony" marks the start of a wide-ranging research project that combines digital technology and classical music in a new way: Musicians in 12 different locations will use innovative technology to overcome physical distances and perform a joint concert for symphony orchestra and large chorus. The Mozarteum University is also contributing to the project, in the form of a choir.

With the new building of the Mozarteum University at the Kurgarten (UMAK), the city of Salzburg, the cultural area around the Mirabell Gardens and the Paracelsus Baths get a new player and neighbor. The official laying of the foundation stone on February 27, 2023 at 11 a.m. initiated the implementation of a future-oriented project that invests in the university education and research location Salzburg, in the networking of science and art and in Salzburg's core competence in the field of culture.

As thought leaders of social development, universities are particularly challenged to live up to their pioneering role with regard to sustainable development. A conversation with Maria Kalleitner-Huber, Head of the Department for Sustainability at the Mozarteum University, about potentials and challenges at an (art) university.

How do I set goals and achieve them? How do I organise and develop the company?

Oscar Jockel is currently Kirill Petrenko's conducting assistant with the Berlin Philharmonic and a conducting fellow of the Karajan Academy for two years. He has been appointed the first Composer in Residence of the Brucknerhaus Linz for the 2020/21 season. Previous commissions range from works for solo instruments to sound installations and orchestral works, the latter for the Bruckner Orchestra Linz or the Camerata Salzburg, for example.

Matthias Bartolomey has been professor of concert violoncello at the Mozarteum University since October - and he has a lot planned for the future, starting with a course on progressive playing techniques in addition to repertoire teaching, which combines his diverse chamber music and soloist experience with new, intuitive improvisational approaches.

Since October 2019, Spot On MozART has been dedicated to the visual exploration of listening and thus to a new understanding of the music of Wolfgang Amadé Mozart. At the end of the project in autumn 2023, the Mozarteum University will present a retrospective of all implemented art and research projects in a comprehensive publication.
