Heiko Voss is a dramaturge, lecturer, and opera director whose work combines theatre practice with academic teaching. Since the 2019/20 season, he has served as Head Dramaturge of the Opera Department at Theater Freiburg and, in this capacity, is a member of the theatre’s artistic management team. His work in Freiburg informs his teaching at the Mozarteum University Salzburg, where he brings current professional experience from the world of opera and theatre into the classroom.
Heiko Voss studied dramaturgy, musicology, and modern German literature at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and the Bavarian Theatre Academy August Everding. During his studies, he was a scholarship holder of the German Academic Scholarship Foundation and worked as a dramaturge on the feature film Das Zimmer im Spiegel.
He began his professional theatre career as a dramaturge at the Theater Heidelberg in the 2008/09 season before moving to the Salzburg State Theatre for two seasons. Since the 2011/12 season, he has worked at Theater Freiburg, initially under the artistic direction of Barbara Mundel and, from the 2017/18 season onwards, under Peter Carp.
In February 2015, he made his directorial debut together with Rudi Gaul in a production of Il trovatore at Theater Freiburg. Guest engagements as a production dramaturge have also taken him to the Munich Biennale and the Konzert Theater Bern. Since the 2019/20 season, he has been Head Dramaturge of the Opera Department and a member of the artistic management team at Theater Freiburg.
Alongside his theatre work, Voss has taught at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, the University of Freiburg, and the Akademie für Darstellende Kunst Baden-Württemberg. Since the winter semester 2013/14, he has also held a teaching position at the University of Music Freiburg.
