Kerstin Groß has been a lecturer at the Mozarteum University Salzburg (Department of Musicology) since 2017. Her main research areas focus on folk music and education, and since 2018 she has also taught music pedagogy. Alongside her academic work, she is active as a music teacher with the Upper Austrian State Music School Association and as a freelance musician, juror, lecturer, and organiser of folk music training courses throughout the Alpine region.
Kerstin Groß (b. 1982) completed her undergraduate studies in instrumental pedagogy (diatonic harmonica, accordion, diatonic and chromatic hammered dulcimer) in Graz in 2004. She subsequently earned a master’s degree in diatonic harmonica at the Mozarteum University Salzburg in 2006. She completed all her studies with distinction.
During her time as a student assistant to Associate Professor Thomas Hochradner, she contributed to musicological publications such as Lieder und Schnaderhüpfl um 1900 aus dem Sammelgut des Arbeitsausschusses für das Volkslied in Salzburg (= Corpus Musicae Popularis Austriacae, vol. 19) and the Thematisches Werkverzeichnis der Werke von Johann Joseph Fux, vol. 1. She was also involved in the cataloguing and academic study of the musical estate of Tobi Reiser on behalf of the Salzburg Museum.
In addition to her doctoral studies, Kerstin Groß has published CD reviews and articles for the Austrian Volksliedwerk and the Bavarian magazine Sänger & Musikanten since 2007. She has contributed musicological articles to specialist journals and edited volumes, including "Von der Vielseitigkeit der Volksmusikinstrumente" in Phoibos. Zeitschrift für Zupfinstrumente (2009) and "Geschichte und Wandel der Volkstanzmusik in Österreich und Südtirol" in Volkstanz zwischen den Zeiten (2012). Given the importance she places on the connection between research and musical practice, she has also worked as an editor of sheet music editions for the Styrian Volksliedwerk (2006–2011) and for her own publishing imprint, Traedition.
Since 2021, she has presented her work at musicological symposia, including the symposium of the Austrian Society for Musicology (Young Musicology Vienna), the DVSM Young Musicians’ Symposium in Germany, and the symposium Dance Music in the Alpine Region at the Mozarteum University in Innsbruck.
Following her certification for lateral entry into general education and completion of the three-stage aptitude assessment process for teaching classroom music in Austrian schools, she took up a position at a secondary school with a music focus in 2024.
Her doctoral project, From Traditional Dance Music to Concert Folk Music: Making Music with the Diatonic Harmonica in Salzburg, remains an ongoing and personally significant research endeavour.
