Stephan Costa teaches jazz composition at Mozarteum University Salzburg (Innsbruck campus) and has headed the Jazz and Improvised Music Department at the Tyrolean State Conservatory since 1991. Alongside his teaching, he is an active pianist, composer and improviser with an extensive international performing career. Having studied piano, jazz, composition and arranging at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz and the Anton Bruckner Private University, he has collaborated with artists including Bob Mintzer, Randy Brecker, Maria Schneider, Ray Anderson, Ernie Watts, Nils Landgren and Wolfgang Mitterer, and has further developed his improvisational practice through numerous projects and masterclasses with musicians including Ellis Marsalis, Franco D'Andrea and Joey Calderazzo.
