Stephan Costa studied piano, jazz & composition/arrangement at the Musikhochschule Graz and at the Anton Bruckner Privatuniversität in Linz. Since the age of 16 he has been involved in jazz improvisation, through numerous projects and performances from solo to big band as well as master classes with Ellis Marsalis, Ray Anderson, Franco d'Andrea and Joey Calderazzo he has deepened his experience with a wide variety of sound bodies. He has worked with international musicians such as Bob Mintzer, Randy Brecker, Maria Schneider, Ray Anderson, Ernie Watts, Nils Landgren, Wolfgang Mitterer and is also active as a composer. Since 1991 he has been head of the jazz & improvised music department at the Tiroler Landeskonservatorium and is a teacher of jazz composition at the University Mozarteum, Innsbruck location.
