Senior Artist in the field of Metal / DTT EducationDepartment of Fine Arts & Design

Working across engineering, design and visual communication, Michael Dorfer explores the intersection of technical precision and creative practice. His work combines industrial design, spatial strategies and digital visualisation, drawing on experience in both engineering and artistic contexts.

This interdisciplinary approach is rooted in a professional trajectory that bridges technical and artistic education. After completing apprenticeships in machine production technology and technical drafting, Michael Dorfer worked as a technical draftsman at Böhler Uddeholm while pursuing further studies in engineering. He later earned a bachelor's degree in Development Engineering and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria in Wels.

From 2015 to 2018, he studied in the Space&Design Strategies programme at the University of Art and Design Linz, where he also worked as a student assistant in the metal workshop. He subsequently completed a master's degree in Industrial Design at the same institution, graduating in 2021.

Alongside his teaching activities at Mozarteum University, he has worked since 2017 at Knorr-Bremse IFE, where he develops technical 3D visualisations, animations and design mock-ups for product presentation.

His work has been presented in exhibitions and festivals including:

  • Co-Creation No Curation (2015), Raumschiff Linz.
  • Not Welcome (2016), OK Linz
  • Ars Electronica Festival (2016), Postgarage Linz
  • Festival of the Regions (2017), Marchtrenk
  • UABB - Urbanism and Architecture Bi-City Biennale (2017), Shenzhen & Hong Kong
