This year's award for particularly successful artistic-scientific research proposals goes to Heike Henning for her collaborative project proposal "Rethinking and Innovating Choral Musicking in the Digital Space", which is currently being prepared for submission to the Austrian Science Fund FWF in cooperation with the University of Liechtenstein and the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences.

Following on from the BioSphere & TechnoSphere 1 conference (Salzburg 2025), the year's conferences aims to place a particular emphasis on issues relating to emotion and the history of emotions. In interdisciplinary research on emotions, emotion and affect are sometimes strictly distinguished conceptually: emotions are understood as cognitive-intentional, communicative, socially shaped and thus historically changeable practices. By contrast, affects are understood as pre-conscious, bodily and instinctive reactions.

Thanks to guitarists such as Andrés Segovia and Julian Bream, composers such as Villa Lobos, Castelnuovo Tedesco, Britten, Rodrigo, Webern, Stravinsky, Takemitsu, Kurtag, Henze, Boulez, Crumb, Petrassi, Donatoni, Gnattali, Guastavino, Brouwer, Piazzolla and many others have been inspired to incorporate the guitar into ensembles, often in unusual combinations. The students of the guitar classes enthusiastically participated in 10 editions of this competition (which we were able to organise until 2019 thanks to the support of the French string company Savarez-Corelli). The festival presents world-class concerts, an international competition and an engaging program of artistic and educational events. Highlights include performances by the Italian virtuoso Lorenzo Micheli, a round table on pedagogy featuring leading figures in guitar education in Austria and internationally,  a very special evening featuring ensembles of young music-school students alongside the best guitar students of the Mozarteum University, the final round of the Mozarteum International Guitar Competition. The program also features masterclasses, workshops on composition for classical guitar, a lutherie exhibition and matinée concerts by Mozarteum guitar students. Information on applying for masterclasses The Mozarteum International Guitar Festival offers a unique opportunity to study with some of the most renowned names in the international classical guitar scene in an environment of high artistic and cultural prestige. Participants must submit the registration form (without payment of the fee) by September 15th to the email address andrea.de_vitis@moz.ac.at. From this date, they will receive confirmation from the festival and must pay the fee of € 170,– by bank transfer by September 30th at the latest. Both the initial registration (without payment) and the payment confirmation must be sent to the email address andrea.de_vitis@moz.ac.at. Payments made before receiving confirmation from the festival will not be refunded. Selection of teachers For the three individual lessons, each participant must indicate their five preferred teachers. At least two of these preferences are guaranteed. For inquiries, please email: andrea.de_vitis@moz.ac.at.  Information on applying for the competition The Mozarteum International Guitar Festival will also host the second edition of the Mozarteum International Guitar Competition, offering aspiring guitarists a unique platform to showcase their talent and artistic vision. The competition will be divided into two phases, with particular emphasis on the originality of the proposed programme and the coherence of the artistic project. The competition aims to encourage reflection on the repertoire and inspire participants to explore rarely performed works, engage with lesser-known guitar literature and consider the deep connection between artistic personality and repertoire selection. It also highlights the importance of contemporary music and compositions by women, thus promoting diversity and innovation in the world of guitar. Each year, the competition will include a selection of compulsory pieces that participants will perform in addition to their freely chosen repertoire. For this edition, participants are required to perform a contemporary music composition written after 1970. Competition structure Preliminary round (online) Participants must submit a video with a programme of their choice lasting 15 to 20 minutes. Submissions should demonstrate stylistic authenticity and interpretative coherence, originality and technical skill. Submission deadline: October 15th 2026 Final (live) The live final will take place on December 5th 2026 in the Solitär at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg. A maximum of five finalists will be selected from the preliminary round. Each finalist will perform a programme of their choice in front of an international jury. Duration: approx. 20 to 25 minutes. The program must include a contemporary music composition written after 1970. Upon registration, each candidate must submit a conceptual overview of the selected programme (in English or German) explaining the artistic coherence between the pieces selected for both rounds. The repertoire is freely selectable and there is no obligation to include works by female composers.However, if the programme contains such pieces, the performer may win the special ‘Women's Voices’ prize. Note: Repeating pieces in the final round that were performed in the preliminary round is not permitted, except for the contemporary music composition, which may be repeated. Age limit People born on or after December 5th 1996 are eligible to participate. Information on applying for guitar makers The Mozarteum International Guitar Festival is pleased to announce the selection process for eight guitar makers who will have the opportunity to exhibit their instruments in the prestigious setting of the festival. The instruments will be exhibited in the foyer of the main building of the Mozarteum (Mirabellplatz 1, Salzburg) during the 3 days of the festival. This is a unique opportunity to showcase your work to artists, students, and professionals from the international classical guitar scene. Application, fees & deadlines To participate in the selection process, please submit the following: A completed application form confirming your availability to participate in the festival A short artistic biography Participation fee The participation fee is € 280,– and is only payable after confirmation has been received from the organisers.
