At the national competition for German-speaking drama students in Frankfurt, the final year of the Thomas Bernhard Institute at the Mozarteum University won several prizes for its production of Elfriede Jelinek's "The Silent Girl". In addition to the Swiss Ensemble Prize and the Audience Prize/Students' Prize, we are delighted to have won two solo prizes for Payam Yazdani and Joyce Mayne Sanhá.

Hanna Binder is an actress, performance artist and musician who is at home on stage and in film. Since 1st of September, she has been bringing her passion for bodywork and authentic stage presence to the Mozarteum in Salzburg as a university professor. With a wealth of experience in theatre, film and dance, Binder now dedicates herself to promoting young talent, always with a focus on the physical expressiveness and humanity that makes theatre so special.

Alek Niemiro, a graduate of the Thomas Bernhard Institute's directing programme, has been awarded the new Austrian Art Alumni Award for his project ‘Last Hour of Resistance’. Starting this year, the award will be presented annually by the BMFWF and Austrian art universities to selected outstanding graduates, and comes with a twelve-month scholarship worth €24,000. Congratulations!

This winter semester, directing students at the Thomas Bernhard Institute are working together with acting students from three different years and in cooperation with scenography students to develop productions based on an examination of theatre texts from antiquity.

The Mozarteum University Salzburg mourns the passing of actor and theatre director Lutz Hochstraate, who died on 29 March 2026.

News … Home News In memoriam Michael-Werner Hornig In memoriam Michael-Werner Hornig 20.05.2026 In memoriam The Mozarteum University bids farewell to Michael-Werner Hornig, a long-serving professor of acting and former head of the Department of Voice. 17.2.1946–8.5.2026 For many years, Michael-Werner Hornig shaped young artists with extraordinary dedication, artistic clarity and human warmth. His teaching conveyed far more than mere technique: he understood acting as an expression of personality, authenticity and musical thinking. Countless singers owe him a debt of gratitude for the decisive impetus he gave to their artistic careers and remember him as an inspiring teacher, an attentive mentor and a passionate theatre professional. With the passing of Michael Hornig, the Mozarteum University loses a defining figure and a highly regarded educator. Our thoughts are with his family and all those who accompanied him on his journey. Amélie Niermeyer Professor at the Mozarteum University and long-time director of the Thomas Bernhard Institute, will take up the position of President of the Bayerische Theaterakademie August Everding in Munich on 1 October 2026. In her new role, the internationally renowned director will lead the largest educational institution for theatre professions in the German-speaking world. We extend our heartfelt congratulations!
