Because there are so many. Public art by Elisabeth Schmirl
No News. The artistic work of Elisabeth Schmirl, lecturer in the Department of Fine Arts and Design at the Innsbruck location, turns the spacious staircase of the Unicorn - opened in 2021 as a start-up and innovation hub of the University of Graz - into a multi-perspective space for encounters, remembrance and commemoration. workshop / symposium May 8, 2023 from 8:30 a.m Unicorn, Conference Deck, Schubertstrasse 6a, Graz An art and memorial project by the University of Graz The building, constructed in 1868/69, served as the headquarters of the Graz student union during the Nazi era, a department of the Reich student union in Berlin. Two National Socialist murals bear witness to this to this day. In 1997, Richard Kriesche and Helmut Konrad commented on the politics of remembrance through an artistic intervention, and in 2017 this combination was placed under monument protection. The current art project "Because there are so many." by Elisabeth Schmirl, university professor for graphics and painting in the Department of Fine Arts and Design at the Innsbruck location, reacts to this situation with portraits and messages from a large number of contemporary and historical, real and fictitious figures: „You can see unique murals printed in flat gray. They run through the stairwell and manifest themselves between the first and second floors a group representation. There, users of the staircase near the wall trigger multicolored shadows with their bodies and engage with the life-size, screen-printed groups.” - (Elisabeth Schmirl) Elisabeth Schmirl selected image and text quotations from the wealth of material, combined them with fictitious figures and sentences and assembled them into an associative structure of biographical fragments, visual motifs, symbols, gestures, thoughts and statements on escape, remembrance and commemoration. In this multi-layered mixture, the stairwell of the Unicorn offers both a place of remembrance and a glimpse into the future. On May 8th there will be a project workshop at the Unicorn in Graz on the occasion of the handover of the artwork by Elisabeth Schmirl to the public.   An event by: University of Graz, Center for Jewish Studies, Institute for Cultural Anthropology and European Ethnology, Institute for History/Culture and Gender History, Institute for Educational and Education/work area migration - diversity - education), arge leb idris architecture/architektin iris reiter and <rotor> center for contemporary art Details at www.elisabethschmirl.at (Opens in new tab)

  • Interdisciplinarity in Unexpected Places 2023
    Interdisciplinarity in Unexpected Places 2023
No News. Reflections on the mountain on inter- and transdisciplinary collaboration: A one-day workshop at Erentrudis Alm discussed ways for (new) transformative collaboration, provided a framework for exchange between researchers and stakeholders on ongoing and future projects at the interface of STEM and ART. A beautiful and inviting place, the right mix of science, art, city and country, and plenty of time to talk and do things together: Interdisciplinarity in Unexpected Places 2023 was all this and more. The research management had gathered 20 people from different disciplines represented at the house for a joint day with selected external participants on the Erentrudis Alm. Among them were Doris Fuschlberger, the digitisation officer of the Salzburg State Museums, Eva Kraxberger from Wissens:Stadt Sbg, Carmen Wageneder-Schmid from the MINT coordination office, Andre Zogholy from KU Linz, Stefan Gindl and Markus Tauber from RSA. The concerns and the future of Salzburg firmly in view and yet far enough away from it to get into joint thinking: Co-creation, inter- and transdisciplinarity, art and research, current cross-cutting issues but also research funding calls and strategies wanted to be shared, developed and possible future projects initiated across disciplinary boundaries. Driven by a great sense of community, and a genuine generosity to share one's expertise and experience, and with a desire to learn from each other, the day was enriching for all participants. There was a special focus on STEAM, culture tech and the digitisation agendas of a music and arts university - made possible by a mix of formats including short impulses (on interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral funding streams and the city's digitisation offensive, European funding lines and the SDGs as a cross-cutting issue of interdisciplinary collaboration), group work and cabin talks on current good-practice examples from the university. The richness and depth of the exchange was an expression of the good cooperation, the willingness to learn from and for each other and thus also representative of basic interdisciplinary qualities. In conclusion, all this became a "HOWTO?" - what does it take to get into interdisciplinary work? - To engage with other positions, to listen and ask questions, to find a common language in the process and to agree on (few but binding) rules of the game, and: to acknowledge the processual character and to give it enough time and space.  May the seriousness of the approach, but also the shared fun and lightness that characterised the time together at Erentrudisalm lead to many a deepened joint artistic and/or research collaboration! Top-class academy summer
News … Home News Top-class academy summer Top-class academy summer 08.07.2022 Press release © Universität Mozarteum 1922: Foundation of the IGNM August 1922. Salzburg becomes the first international meeting place for numerous contemporary composers - Rudolf Réti and Egon Wellesz organize "International Chamber Music Performances" at the Mozarteum. Béla Bartók, Paul Hindemith, Arthur Honegger, Darius Milhauds, Ethel Smyth, Anton von Webern and many more meet at Café Bazar to establish the first international peace project in music after the First World War: On August 11, 1922, the International Society for New Music is founded - as an interest group for composers* and interpreters of contemporary music. "At the time of its founding, the society had a diplomatic purpose: to bring people together to experience music that had been banned four or five years earlier. The IGNM was a project of (new) listening. After the Second World War, the society then showed another facet: to actively promote high-modern music by young composers*, to break up old patterns and to work out something new," says musicologist and project manager of an IGNM exhibition on the occasion of the anniversary Matthew Werley.   2022: ARCO - Art, Research and Creation Opus Exactly 100 years later, the Mozarteum University, in cooperation with Gmem Marseille, is launching a new project dedicated to the intensive promotion of contemporary music: for the first time, the International Summer Academy 2022 will host ARCO - Art, Research and Creation Opus, a French-Austrian academy for contemporary composition. "ARCO is the further development from an academy for contemporary music founded by the French composer Yann Robin and the former German-French Summer Academy OPUS XXI, both of which followed the idea of placing highly renowned French ensembles alongside international young composers, towards a joint and professional finalization of their works up to the public performance. The state funding that ensembles in France receive for outreach work, the awarding of composition commissions and for concerts makes it possible to finance an extraordinarily high level of professionalism that would not be affordable in other contexts," explains Rector Elisabeth Gutjahr. The presidents of France and Austria have assumed patronage of the project. since 2019, selected participants in ARCO have been receiving intensive coaching and immediate feedback on their works in direct work with renowned coaches such as Henry Fourès, Eva Reiter, Yann Robin and Johannes Maria Staud, as well as the ensembles Les Métaboles, Ensemble Multilatérale and the Tana Quartet. ARCO has so far taken place twice in Marseille in a former tobacco factory - due to the pandemic - and in the future will alternate annually at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg. The core team of ARCO focuses primarily on composition; this year, for the first time, vocalists from the Mozarteum University as well as a conducting student will also participate. "It really is a festival, very international and with top-class commissioned compositions. In this respect, it creates a very unique format that you won't find a second time," Elisabeth Gutjahr is pleased to say. the two academies not only offer a unique atmosphere for the participating musicians, but also hold an exciting summer in store for the audience. The two opening concerts will kick things off: ARCO on July 9 in the Max Schlereth Hall and the Summer Academy on July 11 in the Solitär. The ARCO program then leads to, among other things, a production at the Marionette Theater and a special concert experience at the Museum der Moderne. At Mirabellplatz 1, there will be small lunchtime concerts, and two large final concerts. "Visitors will experience an arc this summer over a program that begins very contemporary with ARCO, leads into the classical and romantic periods at the Summer Academy, and concludes with the competitions and events at the Festival - including a concert celebrating the 100th anniversary of the International Society for New Music and a special performance to mark its founding day at Café Bazar. In addition to the Festival, during the summer you can see young talent 'in real time' and be there live when something new is being created," says Elisabeth Gutjahr, describing the special features of this year's "Academy Summer" at the Mozarteum University. the details of the Summer Academy program have also already been determined: Alexander Gilman will perform a brilliant opening concert with his LGT Young Soloists, selected students will show their skills in the concert hall of Schloss Höch as part of the cooperation with the Flachau Municipality and the Cultural Association, and the intensive courses 'Young Excellence' guarantee a great program for the final concert on August 5," says Hannfried Lucke, Vice Rector of the Mozarteum University and artistic director of the Summer Academy. In addition to already familiar names, this year's program will also welcome new guests, including former Summer Academy laureate and concert pianist Herbert Schuch, violinist Latica Honda-Rosenberg, Graz pianist Markus Schirmer, Alexander Gilman, violin professor at the renowned Royal College of Music in London, cellist Valentin Radutiu, internationally acclaimed bass-baritone and KS Andreas Schmidt, and Munich violinist Barbara Doll. For the first time, all master classes and additional courses as well as concerts will be concentrated at Mirabellplatz 1, and the spatial separation of vocal and instrumental classes of past years will be eliminated; an exciting opportunity for new things and for even more intensive, interdisciplinary exchange between students and teachers. baroque Summer Academy in Siena For those who would like to experience the entire program of the International Summer Academy this summer, there is a special highlight coming up in September - SOAK goes Siena! Together with the Italian Accademia Musicale Chigiana, the Mozarteum University established the Baroque Summer Academy in 2021: Master Classes to deepen the study of Baroque music in Siena. Eight teachers from the Department of Early Music will travel to the musically glorious Italian city for concerts, master classes and an opera performed in concert, and together with the participants will create a program worth seeing as the "final festival" of the Summer Academy in Tuscany.

The Last Works: Mozart's Requiem & Minuets from 1791
News … Home News The Last Works: Mozart's Requiem & Minuets from 1791 The Last Works: Mozart's Requiem & Minuets from 1791 04.10.2021 Press release © Universität Mozarteum The Mozartforum of the Mozarteum University, recently awarded the Salzburg Cultural Poster Prize 2021 for "1791", dedicates itself in 2021 to a reconsideration of those works that W. A. Mozart composed in 1791, the last year of his life. Two world premieres are on the program in October. Mozart Forum 1791: A discussion with direct bridging: The University Mozarteum's responsibility for Wolfgang Amadé Mozart gave rise to the founding of a forum committed to networking and stimulating Mozart-related activities of all institutes and departments of the university. The motto 2021: 1791 -  Mozart's year of death, which this year marks the 230th anniversary. All works composed by W. A. Mozart in the last year of his life were to be performed. After a large part of the events in the summer semester 2021 could not take place due to covid, the Mozartforum starts a new attempt with the beginning of the winter semester. Right at the beginning, two world premieres are on the program, which close the circle between yesterday and today and are to be understood as a bridge into the year 2021. Luft und Fleisch (world premiere) October 8 & 9, 2021, 8 p.m., Theater im Kunstquartier, Paris-Lodron-Strasse 2a Is there something timeless to be found in the structures of Mozart's dances, which are now 230 years old, that still moves us today? Mirjam Klebel (concept and choreography), Alexander Bauer and Oscar Jockel (composition & conception) together with students of the Thomas Bernhard Institute create a cross-disciplinary scenic theater evening with new music for chamber orchestra and electronics as well as Mozart's minuets from 1791. "Air and Flesh" is an experiential space in which archetypal sound forms collide and unexpected lines of connection between music and dance culture of the past and present are explored. Conductor: Ruben Hawer, Historical Dance: Margit Legler, Equipment: Thorben Schumüller Requiem in D minor (KV 626), Ave Verum Corpus (KV 618) Sunday, October 10, 2021 at 6:00 p.m., Mülln Parish Church, Augustinergasse 4 With the Requiem with Ave Verum Corpus, the choral concert in the baroque Mülln Parish Church is dedicated to the last work of W. A. Mozart, over whose writing he died on December 5, 1791. Conducted by Jörn Hinnerk Andresen and students of his class, the concert is a reflection of the work, which not only understands the Requiem as Mozart's proverbial final chord that has remained incomplete, but also opens up entirely new perspectives with original instruments and a bridge to the year 2021. With: Mozarteum vocalEnsemble, Mozarteum Chamber Choir and Chamber Orchestra, vocal soloists, musical rehearsal and overall direction: Jörn Hinnerk Andresen The Mozart Forum offers a variety of starting points and points of departure for reflection. Due to the participation of students, mainly young musicians are on stage - a special feature and motivating factor. A manifestation of this idea can be found in the design of a poster (concept: Gernot Sahler, design: Gerhard Andraschko-Sorgo / Studio Linie 3), which was published to accompany a bibliophile yearbook. This poster for the Mozartforum 2021, which features a unique look with a mirrored surface and "1791" sprayed in magenta, won this year's Salzburg Cultural Poster Award.   The further program of the Mozartforum 2021: November 9, 2021 at 7:00 pm, Solitär Piano Recital With Piano Variations, Works for Mechanical Organ and Adagio for Glass Harmonica   November 19 & 20, 2021, Mozarteum University 2-Day Symposium on 1791 In cooperation with the Department of Musicology and the Institute for the History of Musical Interpretation and Reception   November 19.
