    William Rothstein 
    In his lecture, Prof. Rothstein discusses conflicts between melody and harmony in a comparison of his analysis of a psalm setting from Monteverdi's Vespro della Beata Vergine and some analyses - in particular that of Verdi's ‘Anvil Chorus’ (coro di zingari from Il Trovatore) - from his book The Musical Language of Italian Opera 1830-1895 (Oxford University Press, 2023). The analytical content concerns, among other things, psalm tones, church modes and patterns based on the Romanesca movement model.
