Josef Thorak was Hitler's favorite sculptor and, along with Arno Breker, the most important representative of Nazi ideology in the field of sculpture. In view of the propagandistic importance of the two sculptors for the Nazi regime, which is demonstrated, among other things, by the fact that both appeared on the special list of "irreplaceable artists" and were thus exempt from military service, it is astonishing that to date no serious publication on Thorak is available.

The artistic-scientific presentation of the life and work of Josef Thorak in the present image-text combination is suitable for closing this necessary gap and can generate a readership beyond specialist circles precisely through its innovative form of presentation. The aim is to prepare the latest scientific findings of Nazi research by linking them to today's media imagery in a contemporary manner and to make them accessible, thereby awakening interest in the examination of contemporary history even among people outside the field.

With scientific contributions by Susanne Rolinek and Hildegard Fraueneder.
