Karin Skarek

Karin Skarek (b. 1971 in Vienna) has been Vice-Rector for Resources at the Mozarteum since 1 April 2026. Her responsibilities in this role include overseeing the smooth running of the administration, financial matters, non-academic staff and resources at the Mozarteum.
After studying at the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration, specialising in business management and finance, Karin Skarek completed an MBA at Lancaster University Management School in the UK. This was followed by international positions at well-known corporations such as Procter & Gamble, American Express, and Leica Microsystems in Vienna and London, where she held various management and executive roles.
During a voluntary social year, the mother of one son and two stepsons spent 2015/16 in Tanzania, where she supported an NGO in the fields of medicine, education, and social work, contributing her economic expertise on a pro bono basis. This experience marked her transition from the private sector to the non-profit sector. From 2017 until taking up her position at the Mozarteum, Karin Skarek was Financial Director of the Vienna Technical Museum with Austrian Media Library, where she was responsible for all operational and financial matters. In addition to the operational management of the museum, the recipient of the Dr Maria Schaumayer Foundation Award is particularly committed to gender equality and the advancement of women. She also consistently promoted measures to make museum operations more sustainable and resource-efficient; as a result, the museum became the first federal museum to be awarded the Austrian Ecolabel.
Karin Skarek is a passionate amateur musician and singer and has been an active member of the Bach Choir Salzburg since moving to the area.
