Biliana Tzinlikova

Senior Lecturer in Piano and Piano Chamber MusicStrings DepartmentInstitute for Chamber Music

Pianist Biliana Tzinlikova performs both as a soloist and as a chamber musician and Lied accompanist. Her artistic curiosity has led to a wide-ranging discography, including numerous world premiere recordings from the piano repertoire. Since her habilitation at the Mozarteum University Salzburg, she has led a studio for piano chamber music at her alma mater.

In recent years, Biliana Tzinlikova has established herself as a concert pianist, chamber musician and teacher. Her artistic development was shaped by different piano traditions: she studied with Marina Kapatzinskaja at the State Academy of Music in Sofia (Russian piano school) and completed her master’s degree with Christoph Lieske at the Mozarteum University Salzburg, representing the Leygraf tradition. Her intensive work with Ferenc Rados was particularly formative. Further artistic impulses came from masterclasses with Elisso Virsaladze, Andrzej Jasiński, Pavel Gililov, Menahem Pressler, Paul Badura-Skoda and Alexander Lonquich.

A central focus of her artistic endeavours in recent years has been the rediscovery of lesser-known piano repertoire. Her recordings reflect this commitment. In 2014 she released three CDs of Franz Anton Hoffmeister’s piano sonatas (Grand Piano / Naxos International), presenting these works in world premiere recordings. The editions were prepared on a scholarly basis and received wide coverage in the international specialist press. Subsequent recordings have been devoted to virtuoso variation works by Stephen Heller, piano music by Louise Farrenc and, most recently, works by Germaine Tailleferre, Georges Auric and Louis Durey (Paladino Music).

Since 2017 she has collaborated with actors to develop cross-genre concert programmes dedicated to women composers in music history, including a long-standing collaboration with Kammerschauspielerin Julia Gschnitzer. She is also active internationally as a chamber musician and Lied accompanist, performing with artists such as Adrian Eröd, Christian Gerhaher, Colin Jacobsen, Thomas Selditz, Klara Flieder, Thomas Riebl, Ulf Schneider, Patrick Demenga, Gustav Rivinius, Dany Bonvin and Esther Hoppe. As a soloist she has appeared at Salzburg Mozart Week and with the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra under Stefan Sanderling, performing throughout Europe and in the United States. In 2004 she made her debut at the Vienna Konzerthaus.

She has taught at the Mozarteum University Salzburg since 2002. Since her habilitation she has led a studio for piano chamber music and piano and is the initiator and artistic director of the “Kammermusiktage Erika Frieser” festival, dedicated to works by women composers. She is also a co-founder and member of the Ehrbar Chamber Music Society in Vienna.
