Alexander Vitlin

Lecturer for AccompanimentKeyboard Department

Alexander Vitlin is an internationally renowned conductor, pianist, and educator whose career spans leading opera houses in Germany, collaborations with Daniel Barenboim, and acclaimed performances across Europe, Asia, and the United States. Since 2024, he has been a lecturer in accompaniment at the Mozarteum University Salzburg.

Alexander Vitlin completed studies in conducting and piano at the St Petersburg Conservatory (formerly Leningrad Conservatory). In 1977, he won the All-Russian Competition for Pianists. Before accepting engagements abroad, he was chief conductor at various opera houses in Russia. He taught at the Rubin Music Academy in Jerusalem from 1990 to 1992, before working as a solo repetiteur at the Komische Oper Berlin until 1995. He has been a lecturer in accompaniment (principal study) at the Mozarteum University’s Department of Keyboard Instruments since autumn 2024.

In 1994, Alexander Vitlin was appointed professor at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin. His association with the Staatsoper Unter den Linden began in 2004, when he was engaged as a guest solo repetiteur (‘Moses and Aron’ and ‘Boris Godunov’). Since then, he has assisted Maestro Daniel Barenboim at the Berliner Staatsoper, the Salzburg Festival and Teatro alla Scala Milan. He has been a guest conductor for opera, ballet and concerts at the Staatsoper Berlin since 2009.

Alexander Vitlin's concert activities both as a conductor and pianist have taken him to France, Spain, Austria, Romania, Latvia, Italy, Turkmenistan, the USA, China and Japan, as well as opera houses throughout Germany. His performances have been met with great acclaim worldwide.
