Christiane Büttig

Christiane Büttig is a choral conductor and pedagogue with extensive experience in both professional and academic contexts. She has worked with leading orchestras and opera houses, including the Semperoper Dresden and the Salzburg Easter Festival, and is active internationally as a guest conductor. From 2012 to 2024, she was director of the Dresden University Choir, and from 2019 to 2024 artistic director of the KlangVerwaltung Choir.

Christiane Büttig studied music and sports sciences in Rostock and Greifswald, as well as conducting in Dresden. Her training was further enriched by masterclasses with Simon Halsey, among others. She also gained valuable experience as a singer with ensembles such as the VocalConsort Berlin, the Dresden Chamber Choir and the KlangVerwaltung Choir, performing under conductors including Herbert Blomstedt, Riccardo Chailly and Kent Nagano.

From 2012 to 2024, she directed the Dresden University Choir and its chamber choir, conducting more than 200 concerts across a wide range of repertoire in Germany and abroad. During this time, she collaborated with orchestras including the Batzdorfer Hofkapelle, Cappella Sagittariana, Sinfonietta Dresden, the Elbland Philharmonie Sachsen, the Sächsische Bläserphilharmonie, Ensemble Courage, the Dresden Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and members of the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden.

Between 2012 and 2022, she prepared the chorus for numerous productions at the Semperoper Dresden and the Staatsschauspiel Dresden, including King Arthur, Moskau, Tscherjomuschki, Nabucco, Fidelio and Lobgesang, as well as several contemporary works and world premieres. In the 2021/22 season, she served as Deputy Second Chorus Master at the Semperoper Dresden and prepared the world premiere of The Other Woman by Thorsten Rasch.

From 2019 to 2024, Christiane Büttig was Artistic Director of the KlangVerwaltung Choir. Guest conducting engagements have taken her to Austria, Poland, Denmark, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, as well as to ensembles such as the Chœur de Radio France, the MSO Chorus in Melbourne and Vokal Nord in Tromsø. From 2017 to 2021, she was Director of the international choral academy In terra pax.

Recent projects include collaborations with the Bach Choir Salzburg at the Bruckner Festival Linz, performing Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 and Das klagende Lied under Markus Poschner, as well as further performances of Mahler’s Third Symphony with Riccardo Minasi and the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg. At the Salzburg Easter Festival, she worked as chorus director for productions including Mozart Requiem and Lohengrin under Christian Thielemann.

In September 2024, she prepared a choir of more than 270 singers for Brahms’s Nänie, Schicksalslied and Die Parzen under the direction of Kent Nagano at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg with the Hamburg State Orchestra.

Between 2022 and 2024, Christiane Büttig held teaching positions at the University of Music and Theatre Munich and the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.
