Musik-Multis: Next Generation – launched in the 2021/22 school year – is aimed at music-loving teenagers aged 15 to 18 who are interested in music education and want to explore and develop their musical and teaching skills. This support programme, the only one of its kind in Austria, guides participants through several modules over the course of a school year and provides practical insights into the field of music education. Requirements include currently taking vocal and/or instrumental lessons and a willingness to participate regularly in class sessions. The next programme begins in October 2026; registration is open until 10 July.

The project is supported by two prominent artists: Martin Grubinger, an internationally acclaimed percussion virtuoso, and Yasmo, a multi-award-winning rapper, slam poet, and host.

The 21 “Music Multis” of the 2025/26 academic year from Salzburg, Upper Austria, Carinthia, Styria, and Germany have just celebrated the conclusion of their programme. Despite their diverse musical backgrounds, instruments and prior experiences, they were united by a common goal: a passion for music and the joy of sharing it with others. At the grand closing event, the participants gave impressive presentations of what they had developed, learned, and created together over the past year. These included music workshops in kindergartens and schools, a “living jukebox”, and an ABBA flash mob. The programme was rounded off by choir and band performances, instrumental ensembles, and touching original compositions. Over the course of the past year, a dedicated community has grown out of the participants’ shared passion for music.

Project coordinator Andreas Bernhofer offered insight into the aims of the initiative: “Musik-Multis: Next Generation demonstrates how important it is to provide young people with opportunities for personal growth, networking, and guidance. Here, like-minded individuals come together, develop ideas collaboratively, and gain valuable experience for their future musical and professional careers.”

What makes the programme particularly valuable is its combination of musical practice, creative project work, the development of music education skills, and the opportunity to become familiar with Mozarteum University. Many of the participants plan to study music education in the future.

Musik-Multis: Next Generation is organised by the Department of Music Education at Mozarteum University Salzburg in cooperation with the Salzburg Department of Education and with support from the State of Salzburg. It is regarded as one of the most innovative programmes for promoting young talent in the field of music education in the German-speaking world.
