In memoriam Peter Gülke
The Mozarteum University mourns the loss of Peter Gülke. As a conductor, musicologist and author, he uniquely combined musical practice with thoughtful reflection on music. His artistic and intellectual work shaped generations of musicians over several decades.
Peter Gülke
1934-2026
Peter Gülke had a particularly close connection to the Mozarteum International Summer Academy in Salzburg. For many years, he led the conducting course at the Summer Academy, collaborating with the Deutsche Kammerakademie Neuss am Rhein and the Salzburg Chamber Soloists, among others.
Through his artistic, educational and scholarly work, Peter Gülke played a significant role in shaping the international profile of the Summer Academy and the Mozarteum for many years.
His masterclasses were characterised by an accuracy in analysis and stylistics, and a great openness to the musical ideas of others. Many remember him not only as an outstanding musician, but also as an inspiring teacher and conversationalist.
Perhaps one of his most impressive skills was his ability to convey music through words and make it accessible. Peter Gülke was one of those artists whose ideas were just as compelling as his conducting.
The Mozarteum University Salzburg expresses its deep gratitude to Peter Gülke for his longstanding commitment and artistic contributions, and extends its sincere condolences to his family and his many students.
