In memoriam Lutz Hochstraate
The Mozarteum University Salzburg mourns the passing of actor and theatre director Lutz Hochstraate, who died on 29 March 2026.
A tribute by Dr. Hermann Keckeis.
The Departments of Opera and Voice pay tribute to their esteemed colleague Prof. Lutz Hochstraate, who passed away on 29 March 2026.
Lutz Hochstraate, long-time Artistic Director of Salzburg State Theatre, taught in both the Opera and Voice Departments from 2011 to 2016. An actor and director himself, he guided students with great sensitivity in developing dramaturgical awareness and shaping stage characters. His calm and positive approach to teaching enabled students to create convincing portrayals, including nuanced depictions of fragile and intimate human traits. He was highly regarded and warmly appreciated by colleagues and students alike.
As Artistic Director of Salzburg State Theatre, he created opportunities for young students to gain their first professional stage experience in specific roles and helped many Mozarteum graduates secure their first engagements with theatre companies.
Lutz Hochstraate also served as a member of the Mozarteum University’s Council during the period of university reform from 2000 to 2002.
