The Guitar in Salzburg

The 2024/2025 academic year has been exceptionally dynamic for the guitar department at Mozarteum University Salzburg. Guitar students have taken part in a wide range of artistic and educational activities, reflecting the department’s vitality and high artistic standards. Among the most notable events is the upcoming concert on June 16, 2025, at the Italian Cultural Institute in Vienna, titled: “Vienna and Italy in Dialogue: The Guitar as a Bridge Between Two Traditions.”
Organised by Prof. Andrea De Vitis, the concert will showcase nine talented Mozarteum guitar students in a programme devoted to the early 19th-century classical-romantic repertoire. Works by Mauro Giuliani, Anton Diabelli and Marco Aurelio Zani de Ferranti will explore the captivating stylistic synthesis between the formal elegance of the Viennese school and the lyrical intensity of the Italian operatic tradition.
The concert will take place at the Italian Cultural Institute (Ungargasse 43, Vienna) at 6:00 PM. Admission is free and all music lovers are warmly invited.
Performing on stage will be nine outstanding Mozarteum students: Malte Höfig, Ana Gorjanc, Yudeok Seo, Catalina Pires, Giovanni and Matteo Cisternino, Dimitar Kostadinov, Tobias Hartmann, and Daniló W. Kunze.
This concert is part of a broader programme that has seen Mozarteum guitar students engaged in a range of noteworthy projects throughout the year:
- “Women’s Voices”, a concert organised by Prof. Laura Young, celebrating music by women composers.
- “Wiener Serenade”, a refined tribute to the Viennese musical tradition, curated by Prof. Andrea De Vitis.
- The “Erasmus Concert”, a celebration of European cultural exchange featuring international students, organised by Professors Bozhana Pavlova and Giuseppe Feola.
- Numerous class concerts held by all faculty members, offering students ongoing opportunities for artistic growth.
- A vibrant masterclass led by Maestro Giampaolo Bandini (Conservatorio “Boccherini” of Lucca), culminating in the themed concert “Sonata Appassionata”, with alternating performances by students from the Mozarteum and the Lucca Conservatoire – a fine example of inter-institutional collaboration.
In addition, on June 14, 2025, Giovanni and Matteo Cisternino, students of Prof. De Vitis, will perform with the renowned Österreich Ensemble für Neue Musik in the world premiere of a new composition by Klaus Ager – a strong statement of the department’s commitment to contemporary music.
With initiatives ranging from historical repertoire to cutting-edge new works, from cultural diversity to innovative creativity, the guitar programme at Mozarteum University Salzburg continues to be a vibrant and evolving voice in the European music landscape.
