Hans Werner Henze's "Elegy for Young Lovers" will be the second production in the 2023/24 winter semester of the Department of Opera & Music Theatre to take to the stage of the Max Schlereth Saal from 26 January. A conversation with maestro Gernot Sahler about so-called "new music", the major challenges for budding artists and insights into pedagogical practice during rehearsals.

The Institute for New Music organises all events in the field of New Music that are relevant for academic studies, from the supervision of individual students to collaborations between several classes, departments and other internal and external institutions.

With the founding of the SEM - Studio for New Music, the Mozarteum University has played a pioneering role in the field of computer music and creative work with new media in Austria since 1958. Today, it offers students a wide range of possibilities, from working with analog synthesizers to computer-based composition.

Since 2009, the HerbstTöne have traditionally gilded the autumn with top-class chamber music concerts and fabulous works of chamber music literature. Teachers and students of the Mozarteum University jointly design the diverse program.

With the first edition of the new interdisciplinary ORA Early Music Festival, the Mozarteum University is celebrating a special premiere. Over three days, early music, contemporary musical language and improvisation come together in numerous concerts and sound performances.

The Department of Composition and Music Theory explores contemporary forms of instrumental and electroacoustic composition and explores scholarly, artistic, and pedagogical approaches to music and styles of all periods.

Three days of singing, dancing and making music: From 24 to 26 April, the new ORIGO festival celebrates folk music in its lively and constantly changing form at the Mozarteum University and in the city of Salzburg - and thus sees itself as a platform that not only preserves folk music, but also makes it possible to experience it in all its dynamism and creativity.

The annual festival of the Institute for New Music and the Studio for Electronic Music of the Mozarteum University promotes international cooperation between composers and students of contemporary music from different countries. LIMINA develops opportunities and networks for young musicians.
