Reflections – Female composers and their heirs in the sound of the present

‘Reflections’ is another project that pursues an egalitarian approach to the development and exploration of the arts: works by female composers from earlier centuries that have been forgotten posthumously or overlooked, rarely heard or never heard in this country are reflected in the diverse musical languages of today's musicians.

Reflections – they can show us (more or less) familiar things from new perspectives or in a different light, and in the event on 12 November 2025, they will allow the past and present to enter into dialogue: the music of three female composers from history will encounter the creative work of today's students.

Reflections Competition

The concert was based on the inter-university composition competition Reflections, held in winter/spring 2024/25 by the Mozarteum University Salzburg, the Anton Bruckner Private University Linz and the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. Its challenging task was to draw inspiration from the rich chamber music tradition of historical female composers and translate these influences into the diverse musical languages of the present – in order to create new musical horizons.

From the numerous submissions of impressive artistic quality and originality, the jury selected three prize winners, whom we warmly congratulate:

  • Tim Lugstein (Mozarteum University Salzburg)
  • Lluís Gual i Gasull (Anton Bruckner Private University Linz)
  • Hao Lin (mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna)

The composition competition will be followed by the Spiegelungen concert: in this chamber music concert, the award-winning works will be premiered in direct comparison with their respective inspirations by Dora Pejačević, Emilie Mayer and Rebecca Clarke.
