"I feel most honoured that my colleagues have once again elected me as leader of the senate and look forward to continuing our work together. In the current social and political climate, universities bear a great responsibility for upholding academic freedom in the face of nationalistic border politics. We are currently witnessing how, even in democratic states in Europe (such as Hungary, Slovakia and Serbia) and in the USA, the freedom of academics and artists is gradually becoming restricted. It is for this reason that actively defending our fundamental democratic rights as the basis of our work in the Arts, in the University and in Society is a matter close to my heart. As a senate, we stand for the rights of participation and codetermination, and see our university as a public space of societal discourse." Univ.-Prof. Christoph Lepschy

The Senate is one of the three governing bodies of the Mozarteum University Salzburg, along with the Rectorate and the University Council. The 18 members of the Senate are the elected representatives of their respective curiae or – in the case of the student members – the students’ union. The senate is composed of nine professors, four non-professorial teaching staff, one representative of the university employees and four students.
