The Department of Early Music brings together the diverse competencies and the lively character of early music and its performance practice in an interdisciplinary way. The goal is a qualification that takes into account both personal inclinations and professional perspectives.

The Institute of Chamber Music coordinates everything relating chamber music. This includes all curricular matters (from compulsory lessons to the introduction of a master's degree in chamber music), the foundation of a chamber orchestra and the expansion of exchange programmes with other music institutions.

The art and love of the viola led German Tcakulov from Vladikavkaz to St. Petersburg, on to Berlin, Munich, Karlsruhe and now to Salzburg, where he took up a professorship for viola on 1 October 2024.

Memorizing music plays an important role for instrumentalists and has been little researched to date. Elisabeth Eder took on this topic in her dissertation and was able to identify or categorize 100 learning strategies and show aspects that support memorization.
