Music and Democracy
Demokratie bietet keinen garantierten Zustand, sondern muss stets neu ausgehandelt, gemeinsam erarbeitet und gelernt werden. Identität zu wahren, Heterogenität und Zusammenarbeit zu stärken, bedeutet die Achtung demokratischer Prämissen, die quer zu Einebnung und Eindimensionalität stehen. Das Verhältnis zwischen Musik und Demokratie, d.h. Musik und ihr Potenzial, Demokratie zu konsolidieren, ist zu beleuchten und umgekehrt die Demokratie als künstlerische Inspiration zu befragen.

This special issue explores a complex relationship from both historical and contemporary perspectives. International concepts from musicology, music education and music theory are examined to show whether and how democracy takes shape in music and how music has contributed and continues to contribute to shaping democracy. This raises the question of whether it can even be the task of music, if its artistic freedom is enshrined in law, to support democratic systems instead of reacting critically to them as a seismograph and part of an open culture and, if necessary, polarizing them?
