Happy Birthday, Teacher Training WEST!
Mozarteum University has recently marked ten years as a member of the Western Partnership for Teacher Education. Together with the University of Innsbruck, the University College of Teacher Education Tyrol, the University College of Teacher Education Vorarlberg and KPH Edith Stein, it prepares young people in Tyrol, Vorarlberg and South Tyrol for a career in secondary school teaching.

The establishment of the partnership in 2016 was a step into the unknown for all the participating institutions. If they were to forge a shared pathway to a teaching qualification, the differing structures, academic cultures and organisational processes of each institution would have to be aligned. While the project required extensive discussion and compromise in its early stages, it has since become a well-established partnership that stands for quality, innovation and mutual trust.
Mozarteum University's contribution to the partnership lies in its expertise in music and arts education. Together, the partners have worked continuously to refine the curriculum and pioneer new approaches to teacher education. As early as 2018, the partnership responded to the growing demand for qualified teachers by introducing the single-subject master's programme in music education, now known as the "lateral entry" programme.
Teacher education itself is also constantly evolving. Social change, new legal requirements and the demands of everyday school life make it necessary to continually adapt the curriculum. A revised teacher education programme will therefore be introduced in the 2026–27 academic year. The bachelor's programme will last three years, while the master's programme will remain two years in length. Initial admissions figures indicate that the revised programmes have also been very well received by incoming students. New specialisation tracks in music production and popular music performance, together with greater scope for specialising in jazz/pop and traditional folk music and an expanded practical semester, are designed to prepare future teachers for the challenges of their profession.
Ten years of collaboration in teacher education in western Austria demonstrate just how much can be achieved through cooperation between universities and university colleges of teacher education. For Mozarteum University, this collaboration is far more than an organisational partnership: it provides an opportunity to contribute its own artistic and pedagogical expertise while working with its partner institutions to shape a teacher education programme that is fit for the future.
