With the call "Out of the box", the city of Salzburg launched a competition of innovative ideas for the districts of Riedenburg and Maxglan. With "We swarm for the beehive" by Agnes Scherer and "burgglan" by Erik Hable, two of six awards went to members of the Mozarteum University.

Department of Fine Arts and Design

The prerequisite was the formation of teams from art, science and business, the involvement of local residents and the networking of local actors. The six winning projects convinced the jury with their original ideas to bring residents together and to focus on different aspects of the neighborhoods and can look forward to € 5,000 each for the implementation of their ideas. In the period from September to December 2023, a documentary film, a game, thematic walks with subsequent workshops, and a meeting space will be realized.

The jury consisted of Djordje Čenić (filmmaker), Dorit Ehlers (actress), Barbara Gollackner (designer), Ivana Pilić (independent curator and cultural scientist) and Seda Röder (musician and entrepreneur).

We swarm for the beehive
The project combines artistic interpretations with specifics from the world of beekeeping. The goal is to design a game inspired by the coexistence in a beehive and thus to create new encounters among the players around the Riedenburg neighborhood. The team is also designing a honey dispenser and a mobile landmark that will be useful beyond the duration of the game.

During walks, the residents are invited to rediscover the familiar and to track down new points of identification and orientation in the local environment. In the process, photos or recordings are made, which serve as models for the pictorial realization. In a workshop, the participants experiment with risography and silkscreen printing and create small graphics of their own house or buildings from Maxglan and Riedenburg.
