Alienation as an aesthetic category
Fri 2.12.2022
On November 19, the solo exhibition of the artist Wiebke Siem "The Maximum Minimum" will open at the Museum der Moderne Salzburg. Her working method is characterized by the alienation of everyday objects such as clothing, toys, wigs, hats or furniture. The aim of these deformed objects is, among other things, to deconstruct and reflect on gender-specific attributions.
Birke Sturm, professor for didactics of visual education, deals in her research with questions of fashion, beauty ideals and the youth newspaper. Based on her article "The Tension of Mallarmé's Deception Mannoveur. Temporal, Territorial, and Financial Economics in Fashion," Sturm will present her research perspective. Further, the question of what role the theme of alienation has played in her research to date will be discussed. How and in which contexts does it appear and disappear in her research biography? Afterwards, we discuss with Birke Sturm and the curator of the exhibition Lena Nievers Wiebke Siem's artistic practice with regard to the questions of lifeworlds and everyday cultures. We also ask how the methods and forms of alienation in Siem's artistic work have changed over time. The discussion will be moderated by students of the Mozarteum University.
