Peter Schmidt

Peter Schmidt is head of the Sound and Video Studio / MediaLab at the Mozarteum University Salzburg, where he has also taught since 2010. With a background spanning music, sound engineering and theatre production, his work combines artistic and technical expertise in the fields of audio, media and performance.
Peter Schmidt received jazz and rock guitar training at the Munich Guitar Institute and studied classical guitar at the Berufsfachschule für Musik in Dinkelsbühl. He subsequently studied image and sound engineering at the Robert Schumann Hochschule Düsseldorf and the FH Düsseldorf, graduating as a Diplom-Ingenieur in 1993.
From 1994 to 2008, he worked at the Theater Dortmund as Head of the Sound Department, where he supervised and developed the sound design for numerous theatre, musical, and opera productions.
Between 2013 and 2017, he completed a doctorate in musicology at the Mozarteum University Salzburg with a dissertation entitled The Sound Engineer as an Intermediary Between Art and Technology. Since 2008, he has headed the university’s Sound and Video Studio / MediaLab and has also taught there since 2010.
