Jan Grünwald is a university professor of didactics for visual arts education and head of the Institute for Equality and Gender Studies. He is a member of the Sozietät Kunst Medien Bildung and publishes regularly on art education, media education, media theories in visual studies, and gender studies. As a teacher in the fields of art and art education and as a researcher, Jan Grünwald has several years of experience in schools and universities. He succeeded Franz Billmayer in the winter semester of 2020.

From 2019 to 2020 Jan Grünwald managed the professorship for art education at the Braunschweig University of Art. From 2014 to 2019 he worked as a teacher for art and English and as a tutor at the Leibnizgymnasium in Offenbach am Main and before that at the Goethe Gymnasium in Frankfurt am Main. From 2013 to 2014 he represented the professorship for art didactics at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen. Previously, he was a research associate specializing in new media at the Institute for Art Education at Frankfurt's Goethe University and completed his doctorate (summa cum laude) in April 2011. There he developed a theory on the aesthetic representation of gender in youth cultures, its media dissemination and communicative practices on the basis of media didactic empiricism using case studies. In his teaching and research, Grünwald tries to stay close to the research field and the learners, or to explore the respective field together - in the sense of an engaged pedagogy (bell hooks). It is important to include artistic as well as everyday cultural artefacts in order to settle with the students in the present of their own living environment, without neglecting the history of art education and contemporary discourses, as well as the consequences of digitality for us in general as people who finding ourselves in a new era and especially around us as educators and educators facing new challenges and opportunities.
