Life in Salzburg

Salzburg is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful cultural cities in Austria, surrounded by an enchanting natural landscape. Not only annual cultural highlights on international top level, first of all the Salzburg Festival and the Mozart Week, can be experienced live here, but also the fascinating mountain worlds and lake landscapes of the Salzkammergut.

Residence regulations for international students

Detailed information for all countries of origin and studies can be found on the OeAD homepage or at the Austrian Federal Ministry of the Interior. Registration certificate for students from EU/EEA countries or from Switzerland who stay in Austria for more than three months need a registration certificate in addition to the registration form. For this purpose, students have to prove the following:

  • admission to a recognised educational institution (confirmation of study)
  • comprehensive health insurance cover (e.g. European Health Insurance Card, insurance policy)
  • sufficient means of subsistence (declaration of financial means such as Erasmus scholarship, financing by parents, etc.).

This certificate costs 15 euros once and is permanently valid. If you cannot provide this proof, you will be fined 250 euros in the event of a police check. The Salzburg Office for Public Order is responsible for this registration. When applying, in addition to the fully completed form, a valid passport or identity card and the registration form must be brought along.

There are different types of accounts, e.g. student accounts and salary accounts. Different conditions apply to these accounts.
To open an account, one needs an identity card or a passport, for student accounts also the student ID.

Make sure that your foreign health insurance is also valid in Austria. If not, you will definitely have to take out health insurance in Austria. We recommend taking out Austrian health insurance even if your foreign health insurance is valid in Austria, and this is because the bureaucracy is greatly simplified.

For foreign students from countries of the European Union it is sufficient to bring a European Health Insurance Card. If necessary, this must be handed in to the attending physician.
Guests from other countries with which a social security agreement exists can have their health insurance company in their home country issue a care certificate. With this care certificate, you can pick up an Austrian health insurance certificate from the Salzburg regional health insurance fund, which you then hand in to the attending physician.
In the case of private insurance, it is important to check carefully whether it also covers services in Austria. The Austrian Health Insurance Fund offers the possibility of health insurance ("Student Self-Insurance" and "Voluntary Self-Insurance"). If you are interested, please contact the health insurance company directly:
