Biliana Tzinlikova

Senior Lecturer for piano chamber music & pianoDepartment String StudiesInstitute for Chamber Music
Pianist Biliana Tzinlikova finds her home both on the solo stage and as a chamber musician and lied accompanist. Her curiosity and alert spirit of discovery have led her to a multi-faceted discography, most of which includes world premiere recordings from the piano literature. Since her habilitation at the Mozarteum University, she has led a class in piano chamber music here.

In recent years, the pianist Biliana Tzinlikova has built up an outstanding reputation as a concert pianist, chamber musician and teacher. Biliana Tzinlikova developed the spectrum of her pianistic skills during her studies under the influence of various piano traditions: the Russian piano school - studies with Marina Kapatzinskaja at the State Academy of Music in Sofia - and the Leygraf piano school - master's concert studies with Christoph Lieske at the Mozarteum University. Her intensive work with Ferenc Rados was particularly formative. Biliana Tzinlikova also gained important impulses from masterclasses with Elisso Virsaladse, Arndzej Jaszinsky, Pavel Gililov, Menahem Pressler, Paul Badura-Skoda and Alexander Lonquich.

The focus of her artistic work as a concert pianist has recently been on rediscovering and performing forgotten piano music. Her CD recordings also bear witness to this: in 2014, she made a name for herself among experts with the world premiere recordings of Franz Anton Hoffmeister's piano sonatas (3 CDs, released by Grand Piano, Naxos International). The recordings were scientifically documented and enthusiastically reviewed in international specialised media. This was followed by recordings of virtuoso variation works by Stephen Heller, piano music by French composer Louise Farrenc and, most recently, works by Germaine Tailleferre, Georges Auric and Luis Durey (all CDs on Paladino Music).

Since 2017, she has been working with actors to develop cross-genre concert programmes that focus on female composers in the history of music. She has a close collaboration with the chamber actress Julia Gschnitzer. Biliana Tzinlikova is in demand as a chamber music partner and Lied accompanist on international stages with artists such as Adrian Eröd, Christian Gerhaher, Colin Jacobsen, Thomas Selditz, Klara Flieder, Thomas Riebl, Ulf Schneider, Patrick Demenga, Gustav Rivinius, Dany Bonvin and Esther Hoppe. As a soloist at the Salzburg Mozart Week and with the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra under Stefan Sanderling, Biliana Tzinlikova has performed in almost all European countries and in the USA. In 2004 she gave her debut at the Vienna Konzerthaus.

Biliana Tzinlikova has been teaching at the Mozarteum University since 2002, where she has led a class for piano chamber music and piano since her habilitation and is the initiator and artistic director of the "Kammermusiktage Erika Frieser" festival, which is dedicated to works by female composers. She is a co-founder and member of the Ehrbar Chamber Music Society in Vienna.
