Born in Vienna, Elisabeth Sobotka studied theatre, journalism and business administration at the university in her home town.  She graduated from the University of Vienna in 1990 and wrote a dissertation on the composer and conductor Franco Faccio.  She also completed a course in arts management at the Academy of Music and Performing Art in Vienna, and during her training worked in the concert department and the artistic planning office of the Salzburg Festival. During the 1990/91 season she worked in the planning office in Vienna of Jeunesse Musicale Austria before taking up the post of head of artistic production at Leipzig Opera House.  From 1994 to 2002 she was head of the artistic management office of the Vienna State Opera.  From 2002 to 2007 she held the post of opera director at the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden.  From September 2009 she was the executive manager and artistic director of Graz Opera House.  She has been the artistic director of the Bregenz Festival since January 2015.  She is also a member of the board of trustees of the Opera Foundation in Berlin, and since January 2018 she has been a member of the executive committee of the EMAA of the University of Zurich.
