Karl Zechenter was born in Linz in 1972 and is a freelance artist, director and curator of the artist group gold extra. He has been working in theaters since the 1990s and received the Ferdinand Eberherr Prize for experimental theater in 1997. He has been working with the gold extra artist group since 1998 at the interface of media, technology and society. The projects are interdisciplinary and range from music to installative projects to performance, theater and game art. He was artistic director of the ARGEkultur (1999-2005), director of the Offmozart Festival (2006), founder of the basics festival and is a member of advisory boards for the state of Salzburg.

His works can be seen at the ethnological museum Berlin and the ZKM Karlsruhe at the Art Moscow, Games For Change Festival New York, BELEF Belgrade, studiobühne Köln, brut Wien, Ars Electronica Nightline and european media art Festival EMAF Osnabrück. He received the Salzburg State Media Prize 2012 (Game From Darkness) and the Outstanding Artist Award (Federal Ministry of Art).

He teaches at the Mozarteum University Salzburg, focus on science and art, and at the University of Salzburg.
